Who wants to ride the Glasgow Velodrome?

  1. So, who fancies riding the new Sir Chris Hoy track?

The one thing going to the velodrome did was make me want to give it a go, and it's remarkably easy. Group sessions of 2 hours can be had (or 6 hour sessions for groups that want to get 'accredited' which allows them to race). Costs start from a teeny £10.20 per person (which includes bike hire)...

Groups have to be a minimum of 10, so I'd need definite interest, but happy to take this to the velodrome (you've got to register interest, then they contact you with how to organise a session) - the aim would be to have a session one weekend in January or February (dependant on availability).

Say 'aye' below if you are 100% keen to try this, I'll then organise available dates with everyone and see what I can do with the velodrome.

G'wan, you know you want to!

I would, but I doubt my achilles will be fit for fixed gear riding before the summer. I'll ask my physio though.

What a fab idea! Yes from me.

  5. Right, I've emailed off to get registered to be allowed to book. At the very worst with less than ten folk we can just join into one of the open sessions.

Was talking to my daughter about the very same this weekend, so yes I'd be interested.

Aye, except on the last weekend in January.

I'll happily lend wintersaurus over weekends in the run-up as a fixed gear trainer. It's got flat bars and I expect it's a lumbering oaf compared to the bikes which are there, but it's fixed, and that's the part that really takes getting used to.

Me, me! Although only if it was after the weekend of the 9th of Feb.

Would probably get married life off to a bad start if I was away cycling on the day itself...

*Wimps out*. Did you see how steep, and high those banks were? I used to 'drop in' to smaller ramps on my skate board as a teenager.

One advantage of age is that it has taught me fear, and I am scared of those banks. Enjoy.

I'm in - although I might go and get my accreditation at some point soon as I'm hoping to do some track racing next year. I had a few goes at Edinburgh velodrome a few years back and loved it.

@baldcyclist - When you're riding you are actually perpendicular to the ramp so it's steepness is negligible - honest.

    Baldcyclist's warnings aside... I'm game!.

And if no one minds my mate would like to come along.

Very keen - my availability is a mixed bag though so it'll depend a lot on the date - keep me posted !

That sounds like fun. Sign me up, and JustSittingGordon expressed interest as well.

  15. Cool. Up to around 13 by my count so this should be a go-er. As soon as I have my registration details I'll start sounding out on dates and we can get something organised.

You'll soon be able to hire your own train - plenty room for bikes (well Sherlock Holmes used to.)

    Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty.

In the competition for business, special trains were easy to arrange and were commonplace, both for goods and for passengers. Mail trains were run in connection with transatlantic liners, while passenger specials were used by the rich and famous, and were glamorised in the popular fiction of the time.

Hmmm - I do fancy this, but have never ridden a fixed wheel bike before and I'm not sure this would really be the place to learn. I do know where you can charter a private train though:

  21. Morningsider, surely on the contrary it's the perfect place! Beautifully flat surface, adn no sharp turns to make (just follow the arc of the bank) so no toe-overlap issues and so on... AND with a teacher there to help us along!

WC - you are, of course correct. What I really mean is I have a typically British aversion to literally falling on my jacksie in front of a large group of people, many of whom will know what they are doing.

S'alright, I'm equally unused to sideways sloped surfaces and the closest I've ever got to fixed gear is when I left it a really long time before greasing my freehub.

@Morningsider - as mentioned above, my fixed is available for tryouts. You can only embarrass yourself in front of me by falling into something worse than the canal.

Like Morningsider I'd love to join, other than:-

    Never ridden fixed.
Very, very unfit at the moment.

And I once saw what happened to a friend who came off at Meadowbank. Not nice.

And besides, they'd never let me take the 'bent round that...

Maybe they would if we arrived in force...

Track bikes have 165's I gather and anything longer runs a risk of digging in to all that nice wood - so they tend to restrict the use of the track to 'safe' bikes.

    Then again -

Of course they'll be banned from racing now...

+1 from me. I'm 100% keen but can't guarantee to be available, as the wife works every 2nd Saturday. But I'll worry about that if/when dates are being suggested.

Totally recommend this, although I'm not up for it myself (I did the try-out thing at Meadowbank after the last Olympics). Extremely different to anything else you can do on a bike, and very easy.

You'll be amazed how slowly you can go and remain upright (just try not to be as amazed as me... I found out the limits the hard way!)
