Meadows danger

I've been over Meadows four times today.

After avoiding stray dogs, children and a police car I finally managed to crash into anther bicycle - albeit almost stopped.

I take full responsibility for this as I should have know that the tennage girls that were walking towards me on the cycle way would drift further out as they were texting and larking about. This made a downhill rider take similar avoidance action resulting in both bikes braking as the gap closed. Normally I manage to weave round the assorted debris but not this time. (The road is of course safer but takes longer`!)

Someone asked if I was ok... (even though I was still upright in laid back kind of way.)

I suggested to the girls that they may care to not walk on the cycleway but they were hardly alone.

Yup. There is a lot of this about at the moment (tourists?). Also parents letting small kids veer dangerously around where all the paths intersect. But I'm moving so slow these days it rarely has much effect on me ( insert self-pitying smilie here)

A couple of years ago I suggested that a parent might like to move their child off the cyclepath where it had stopped for a lie-down. The parent didn't seem that bothered.

I started back on the Roseburn circuit this week, and narrowly missed a chap on the first descent because he was walking up the inside of a corner behind an overhanging bush (since pruned aggressively by yours truly).

Fortunately I was going rather slowly (maybe 15mph) and so, in the end, I got a comfortable margin to pass him. But it does make you think, it must be a bit of a grim experience to be a pedestrian on the Roseburn path.

I'm not sure it isn't worse in the Meadows though, because the segregated lanes encourage everyone to hit maximum speed. They made a good choice when they redid the junction to take priority away from the descending route.

Last week, I was heading down MMW, slowing down and signalling to turn right onto North MW because it was 5ish and packed with civilians. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye, I realised there was a very fast bike overtaking me on right, I yelped (rather embarrassing) and slammed my handlebars round -- I thought he was going straight on and I was turning into his path, and there was no time for me to brake. A few seconds later, I realised he had turned, but I couldn't quite believe someone had gone through that intersection that fast - I was exactly creeping, but I was very aware of the wide range of people wandering about.
