...and the topic I was actually searching for.

Has anyone got either of the two variants of Ortleib briefcase? Downtown or Office Bag, going by the website.

Looming in the near future is the need to start lugging a laptop around. Despite my desparate attempts to do everything mobile by tablet, apparently it doesn't meet the MoD security requirements. Boo, hiss, etc.

Given I occassionally ship water over the top of the 'bent in winter weather from passing cars, requirements are: waterproof, looks smart, works as briefcase when off bike (so minimal fixings on the back).

The Ortleibs seem to match this - any user experience? I've always been a Carradice chap...

Only got their classic roller type, but they have been deeply awesome of sauce. Very clever fixings.

QL3 or QL2? By which I mean - is there a magical thing that stays permanently attached to the rack with little pegs that stick out, and these slot in to holes on the bag?

    This is QL3, apparently.

Newps, it's got clever clips on the pannier itself, although since they are sticky of the outy flavour, I can see why a rack fixture would make sense for a briefcase wannabe.

No, I don't have the Ortlieb, but I have recently acquired a Carradice Bike Bureau. I got fed up schlepping my work laptop in standard panniers which are not designed for the job.

The Carradice is wonderful. It's waterproof, but looks smart and presentable. There's a flap which covers the pannier hooks/road dirt so you can just sling it over your shoulder and it looks like a nice office bureau bag...

The current version has honey leather straps, mine is an older one which I picked up for a song on fleaBay unused, still with tags. It has webbing and QR buckles instead, but is otherwise identical.

Much as I'd like to add to my collection of Carradice stuff, it doesn't look like it would fit the underslung rack of the recumbent.

You might be surprised. I'm carrying it on the Pashley Fold-it, which has 20" wheels (406) and the rack is quite low down. The pannier hooks are at an oblique angle to create good heel clearance: this may or may not work with your rack, depends how it's set up.
