"But I'm a cyclist too..."

Although I don't buy into the "many shall be punished for the sins of the one" attitude, I do empathise with other safety advocates when we witness cyclists doing silly things on the road.

Today I had the pleasure (?) of a cyclist in a right filter lane deciding they wanted to be in the left filter while trying to overtake me... with a novel twist:

[+] Embed the video | Video DownloadGet the Flash Videos

I wouldn't generally go in for the name and shame, but in this case I felt I had to stand by my offer.

If you're stuck at work without YouTube, the setting is Leith St to North Bridge (southbound), the highlights:

    - I reach the ASL by passing a vehicle in the right filter lane, no indicators.
    - when the light goes green, I have to palm off the bodywork of the car as the driver tries to force his way into the left filter lane
    - what I would consider a fair swap of my snot glove over his paint VS nearly knocking me off takes a turn for the worst when he then lays into the horn
    - we have a polite tiff in which the main line of defence seems to be "it's OK that I drove into you because I normally cycle" and "people like you are the problem" (which I found really bizarre. What sort of person did he think I was when he drove into me from behind? Instant judge of character based on brand of dynamo rear light?)
    - he then drives into the cycle safety box at the top of the Royal Mile, again in the right-turn-only lane, no indicators (and goes straight on, cutting across the taxi in the straight on lane)

I've often said that you just get people who pose a danger on the roads and the manner of transport they use is quite secondary - perhaps this is a good illustration.

Assuming the "I cycle" defence wasn't complete BS, I'll be interested to see this chap on two wheels. Might make interesting video.

I guess "people like you", are people who do whatever he thinks you did. He looked totally in the wrong to me; it would be interesting to hear his take on things. Also as you say, to see how he rides - perhaps he uses the pavement or keeps out of the way by RLJing??

If Mr Toad was really a cyclist, he should be able to immediately answer the questions:

"Really? What bike do you ride?" and "What size is your bike?"

Answers such as 'a mountain bike' and 'I don't know' are to be met with that sound off Family Fortunes.

    How about:?

"I feel sorry for you Mr Toad. It must be awful to be stuck in an oversized steel box in all this traffic"

If he were truly a cyclist his first words would be "Sorry mate. That was ridiculously stupid. I don't know what I was thinking."

A woman said that to me a week or so ago after she had stepped out in front of me when I was turning into a side road into Tesco. As I was locking my bike she came up to me and said "I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking, and I'm a cyclist too and should know better." Nice :)

Goddammit Ruggtomcat, that Dunning-Kruger Effect has done a proper number on my head. Now I can't decide whether I'm competent because I can accurately track my own mistakes or incompetent because I smugly think I accurately track my own mistakes.

I really can't see what Dave did wrong there, whereas Daily Cycle-Hero there made at least three babooncheeks of it even in the footage Dave caught.

Are you sure he didn't say something like "some of my best friends are black/jewish/gay/insert minority group here"?

Oh yeah. "I'M SPARTACUS! NO REALLY, I AM TOO!"

Best response to all numpties is... 'does your dad ken you are using his car?' or alternatively 'does your mum know you are out after dark?'

These usually gurantee the correct response.

I don't shout at motorists any more after one got out his car and said he'd kill me if he ever saw me again. You just don't know when you might be subjected to "the discipline o' the baseball bat" as Irvine Welch so eloquently put it.

Does he drive a black VW? Oh I've met that guy. I shouted at him after he accelerated over a zebra crossing, nearly hitting a young woman as she walked across. He came out of the car at the lights and was going to punch me off the bike until said young woman rather bravely placed herself between him and me.

Cue two rather bashful looking blokes and then young woman hurling verbal abuse at the driver as he cowered in his car...

crowriver, no it was a black 4x4. On the other hand I did once nearly get knocked off by a driver who was so horrified at what he'd done that he offerred to take me for a coffee. Nice. And I was once congratulated by a driver who cut me up on my cycling skills; actually that's happened a couple of times.

That junction (Leith Street to North Bridge) is a bastard for that. Loads of cars think they just about have time to overtake before turning onto North Bridge.

Thing that gets me is he's basically in the wrong lane is he not? So if Dave had been in a car (which is wider than his bike) they would have collided earlier? - Or is it "Oh I've stuffed up, in wrong lane, oh it's OK I'll just move over on the bike"?

Fact they were again in the wrong lane at the High Street says it all really!

  20. That's my basic test for numptiness - would you have done that if I was in a car?

So the daft Audi driver this morning overtaking me 30 yards before a red traffic light when I was doing 20-25mph. If I'd been going that speed in a car in the city with a red light just ahead would you have overtaken me?

Some years ago I came off my bike when a sizable piece of expanded polystyrene came off the top of a plumber's van as he passed me. In avoiding said obstacle I came down heavily on a greasy road (bus stop on Dalry Road on a damp day). The guy saw what had happened and came to check on me, aplogising profusely. I had scraped an arm and leg (not too badly, but still have scars), and bent my front wheel. Amazingly, not only was he a cyclist, but he made and repaired his own bikes, and offered to take my bike and fix it. He also lived near my work (I was commuting to Sighthill), dropped me off at work, took the bike to his home, sorted the wheel, and returned it later in the day! After all that I hadn't the heart to ask why he hadn't taken more care tying down the polystyrene...

He said if I needed anything done in the future, just to let him know. Some months later I needed another repair, and while he had my bike for a few days, he let me borrow one of his. A slightly different and fortunate take on "but I'm a cyclist" :-)

Well that's the 80% of drivers who think they're "better than average" called then.
Stuff like this gets my goat, but it happens several times a day: you get inured to it after a while.

Interestingly (for a certain value of interest) I've got the contour mounted on the dash too, so whenever I drive in town I pick up footage of my dashing driving skills too.

(Really I'm doing this so I can cut a head-to-head video together, but meh!)

I had a guy once nearly knock me off my bike at a roundabout, he being completely in the wrong. We had words afterwards, the first 20 seconds or so which were us disagreeing who was in the right. Then he noticed my Contour on my helmet, and lo and behold, he instantly apologised and admitted to being in the wrong.

It's always handy to have a camera with you. Once, when I had it attached to my front fork, I took it off to show a pillock that I'd recorded what had happened, as it's not nearly as noticeable down there. He shot off sharpish at that point.

    Cameras ftw.
