I was around The Meadows/Bruntsfield yesterday after 5:00.

In spite of the dark/ice (which existed in the morning when some of the people had gone to work/Uni) there were LOTS of people - clearly well equipped for 'daily' riding.

Saw three young children in childseats.

Obviously there are plenty of people 'on here' who have been cycling for ever.

Just wondering how many have made 'most days' cycling part of their lives in the last year or so - or know others who have - and what has made the difference - confidence, experience, equipment, infrastructure, encouragement or...?

I'll ask at work how many of the parents have less than a year under thier belts.

My neighbour - who works opposite the LB bike emporium - has recently started cycling to work. I was a bit worried about her yesterday, having seen the reports on CCE, when I saw her heading out. Ended up ringing her at work to make sure she got in okay. Recommended cycling on grass, and letting pressure down on her tyres. A bit worried that I sounded like a know-it-all, but also worried that people see me (with studs) and think it's okay, when it's not.

One thing that was highlighted at the Copenhagen talk was the 'four point plan'

    "
    How to generate cycle culture

    Infrastructure

    Regulation

    Campaigning

    Appreciation

    "

The "Campaigning" was by the Council!

The "Appreciation" (of people using bikes) again by the Council - with things like bike counters - publicly showing the rising numbers of cyclists (still waiting for the one on MMW) and the footrests at traffic lights!

I think this time last year was in my cycling interregnum, where I gave up in despair because of the cluelessness of the council (adding extra car parking and removing cycle space to create a Quality Bike Corridor). It was encouragement, specifically CCE, which got me going again.

I'm cycling less, because of an injury sustained as a result of ice on an ungritted Innocent.

Took up cycling regularly in May of this year after taking part in a charity ride from Edinburgh to Brighton (incorporating the BHF ride on the last day).

Got the bug, now have three bikes, cycle to work every day regardless of weather and every weekend (as well as being a commited Strava user).

I think this phrase is 'cycle-bore' now!!! Don't care though, love it!!

Well fortunately we are not your family and friends...

Hard to bore people here, too much, talking about 'cycling'!(?)

last few days have been the first in 2 and a half years i haven't cycled, because of the ice and piss-poor gritting.

I do not drive and have always used cycling, walking & public transport to get around. However, due to the need to lose some weight/get fitter I have increased my miles over the last couple of years. I set myself the target of 5000 miles for this year and am now at 6125 miles - should make 10 000km and am quite pleased with this.

Before this year, I occasionally cycled to work. Maybe half a dozen times a year.

This year, for some reason, I started cycling every now and again in March, and then went three straight months during the summer (ha!) without ever taking the car the 6.7 miles across town. September and October there was occasional driving again due to ill health, November was almost completely on the bike again.

Therefore, I've cycled vastly more this year than I ever have done before. According to Endomondo, I've done 1987 miles this year. Blimey - tomorrow I'll break the 2k mile mark.

We used to have two cars. We sold one this year as it was doing virtually zero miles - totally pointless (I feel almost embarrassed about having had two cars now).

So, yes - definitely cycling more.

Nah. Almost never owned a car, and I've always commuted by bike. I probably do about 50 miles a week. I occasionally use a City Car Club car for big things.

My cycling has vastly increased this year. A year ago I don't think I would have even considered commuting if there was a little rain.

    Ah how time changes :)

At the start of the year I thought I'd be doing really well if I did 3,000 miles this year. At 3,478 miles with most of December to go, I'd say I'm cycling more. I'd be feeling smug if I hadn't seen ExcitableBoy's total.

yes , and no ! before october was cycling more, on purpose, cause its gid ! work, shopping and other stuff, still got two cars but was moving to kill one, but accident means no cycling, except stationary, in kitchen, but physio said i could cycle outside if i wish, as long as was up to it and didnt fall off, or need to put my damaged ankle down "too hard !" reading betwixt the lines i reckon not a good idea, just yet.BUT, the feelings of totall cabin fever etc mean i will be walking and cycling with the enthusiasm of one who just learned to walk ! Mrs needs a car cause of various medical stuff, no excuses, its better for us, i however dont, and will continue to look to non car use, besides the MOT is due next month, 14 years old, and not really looked after so ................?

Increased each year after we moved to Musselburgh in 1998 and I still worked in Edinburgh. About 5,000 miles a year by 2004. Then I started measuring in hours, following advice in Joe Friel's Cyclists' Training Bible. I doubt I do that distance now though as I don't work in Edinburgh any more.

I have increased the number of commuting days over the last three years. Only missed one day this year, so have just passed the 200 day mark for the year which equates to just over 5000 miles.

I've gradually got the kit to enable me to be on the bike regardless of rain and darkness, although I'm still working on the ice. So gradually the number of excuses not to cycle are being chipped away

That said I'm probably doing fewer miles in total because things like POP take up the time when I might have just gone out for a nice bike ride! Most of my cycling these days is running errands...

Forgot to ask any parents and to answer in regard to myself, although mine is a bit dull.

I'm cycling the exact same amount if you look at this week compared to 52 weeks ago, but on a longer timescale I've started tiptoeing into Audax, so yep, definitely more miles.

My weekly commmute is 46, so I'll get through ~2200 miles. I've done a 120, a 133, an 80, a 77, three without computer in the Highlands which Google Maps say were ~60, and a sprinkling of 40's. That brings me up to 2950 or so, so I'll have 3000 in the bag before I even include shopping trips.

    Must try harder.
