"This map shows the location of all accidents in which a cyclist was killed or seriously injured in Scotland during the nine years 2000 to 2008"

Quick sample is dominated by accidents where the cyclist was just "going ahead". Is this true? If so it seems scandalous.

"These maps are not designed to put people off Cycling. It's still safer to cycle to work or to the station than to walk."

The first thing that strikes my about this map is how few fatalities there are in Edinburgh. It shows that actually cycling is a safe way to travel.

It also shows the importance of good road positioning, looking at a few of these accidents collisions are where the cyclist is "going ahead" is at junctions and the driver is turning at traffic lights. In these situation it is important to move into a "primary position" and take control of the lane you are in. If you are unsure about this I would recommend reading Cyclecraft, or even consider getting some cycle training, there is always something new to learn.
