    Hi,

I have a ~2006ish Dawes Galaxy which needs new bearings in the stearing. I found it was stiff and so stripped cleaned and regreased but the steering now is not smooth instead feels like the bearings are not round. I did read somewhere that if they were not put in right they might feel like this, but the bearings have not been replaced in the few years of the bikes history that I know of and I want to try a new set. I saw Halfords sells them and wondered if anyone can help me with the size. Where/how do I measure the bearing ring, so I can go out and buy a new set please?

EDIT: Its a threaded headset BTW (Quil type)

Hmm Sheldon Brown may have the answer:

•You may have installed a bearing retainer upside down. This is not uncommon. There is no real standardization as to which way the retainer faces, so it's easy to err. However, if you take a careful look at the races of your particular headset, you will see that if you install the retainer upside down, the retainer can come into contact with one of the races. Just flip it over. The retainer must not be in contact with anything but the bearing balls.

    Cheers,

    Dave C

Presume they are not in cages that you have the wrong way up??

    Likely 3/16"

Put 8 in a row and measure...

Forget cages, more balls = better.

Put in enough to leave 1/2 ball space.
