Cyclist dies after crash with car in Kirkliston

A cyclist has died after being hit by a car in a town in West Lothian.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the collision happened outside a sports centre in Kirkliston near Edinburgh.

An investigation is under way into the incident, which happened just after 1400 BST.

Officers have appealed for any witnesses to come forward. The identity of the cyclist has not yet been released.

Would be interested to know how this happened as I've ridden here often (also the Sports Centre road is a dead-end, so you'd expect it to be relatively safe).

Alas it's rarely the case that you hear more than the original tragedy in these cases (was the driver who turned left and killed that cyclist in Newington prosecuted? Who knows)

Man arrested over cyclist crash death - BBC

"A driver has been arrested in connection with the death of a cyclist who was knocked down in West Lothian over the weekend.

The 37-year-old man died after the collision on Stirling Road in Kirkliston on Saturday afternoon.

Lothian and Borders Police said a 42-year-old man was due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday charged with road traffic offences.

Officers have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

The identity of the cyclist has not yet been released."

There's something very suspicious about the BBC report.

Normally they would say something like "the cyclist, who collided with the lorry" but in this case they say "was knocked down" which sounds so realistic I can't help but wonder if it got through without an editor checking it over. (It's a matter of open speculation as to whether a cyclist who is shot will be reported as "the cyclist, who collided with the bullet").

I wonder if this means there's been a pretty noteworthy bout of bad driving. My thoughts go out to the family & friends of the victim.

Sadly, this was not so hypothetical in Cumbria last week - where at least two of the victims were identified as 'cyclists'.

Accident happened on section of road between the roundabout (at the old Drambuie Factory) and the M9 Flyover heading towards Winchburgh.

Not sure what exactly happened but a car has been driving into Kirkliston (For Winchburgh)and has struck and killed 1 of 2 cyclists and then ploughed into the "welcome to Kirkliston" sign on the left hand side of the road if you are coming from Winchburgh to Kirkliston.

According to reports this morning, the driver has been charged and is appearing in court today.

  8. Hmmmm. That's very near the West Lothian Clarion time trial course, and often their weekend club runs are around there (I was briefly a member).

I'm sure we'll all be thinking of family/friends and hoping for an appropriate sentence, but this is perhaps not time/space for intemperate remarks.

Was reported in Sunday Herald as 'cyclist dies after collision with car'.

Wrong. Should be 'Cyclist dies after car collides with bike'. Average reader would just do the 'So..? It's dangerous to cycle' routine.

Not an intemperate observation as the way we and the media report 'accidents' has a negative effect.

    "Lower drink-drive limit proposed"

Someone posting on CycleChat has added a list of drink driving limits throughout Europe.

  19. The victim was a friend of a friend - brings it even closer to home really. I remember when the chap was killed in Newington and I rode by to essentially pay my respects (I think he was a guy who rode past my house every morning on his commute).

It had a profound effect for a few days: http://www.citycycling.co.uk/issue35/issue35page38.html

The irony is that the drink-drive limit is universally lower in Eastern Europe; in all but a couple of cases it is even lower than the proposed value of 50mg that is proving so controversial here.

Do people coming over adopt a more relaxed attitude because our limit is 3-4x higher?

Hi there - if anyone knew Kostas, there's going to be a memorial service on Saturday 5th February, 3pm at the Informatics Forum, Crichton Street.
