Enjoyed. Also feel like dressing up like a gladiator and marching to the nearest junction to do battle with cars, but I'm sure that will pass...

That an inquiry is even taking place in to the state of cycling in the United Kingdom is in itself nothing short of a small miracle. You can chart a line through the past few years through the energy of the Blackfriars flashrides, through the determination of The Times' cyclesafe campaign, through the "Go Dutch" big ride to today's inquiry launch. Before all of this began if you had asked any cycling campaigner whether they thought it would be possible that in 2013 parliament would be holding an inquiry in to bicycle use they'd have laughed in your face. All of the energy, passion and commitment swept up in those protest rides, debates and campaigns all called for the same thing that the inquiry will call for; firm action and resolve from the Government to allow many more people to feel enabled to ride.

That's talking about London/England of course, BUT PoP 2012 (and the mini event at St. A House) have made a difference.

    Need to maintain the momentum.

POP2 has finally come up against the slowly grinding bureaucratic wheels of Local Government in the guise of Edinburgh City Council (Pledges 45, and 47 probably apply here). The Cooncil better get their act tegither, or May 18th will be over and Dunedin with, before they get their pothole punctured scaffywagon tyres back on! Good grief, its February 21st already... better get that snake bite fixed for POP2 !

  8. Is it the route issues?I guess last year was easier because no-one knew it would be as big and so we kind of 'got away with it'. There's no surprise factor this year (though they've had a lot more notice!)

    "Is it the route issues?"

I'm hearing stories that there are notions to 'require' a route that would mean minimum disruption to Lothian Buses.

Also hearing that 'high level' decision has been made for same route as last year.

    Who knows...???

So presumably along Princes st. where all the marches and order go? That kind of thing never causes disruption...

That should be fine. We'll all be on bikes, so considerable quicker than all of them pedestrian parades...

@PS, yes, 25-30mph should cover it.

Well, I hope the route includes a strava segment then.

    Strava's servers would melt down!

    Posted 11 years ago #
  16. Strava's servers already do melt down quite regularly!

(I still get a strange satisfaction from downloading the route I've just ridden from my Garmin - boys and their toys I guess).

Kinda like a tree falling in the woods when no-one's around... If it ain't on your Garmin, how do you know you actually did it?

    Back on topic (POP2)!
Hearing just now that the date is changing to Sunday 19th May due to excessive amounts of Saturday traffic making safe cycling to protest on Dunedin streets, is just far too dangerous for the masses assembling for this!

ooh, that's a new explanation. where'd you hear that one?

and here i thought it was just that cyclists on the road might impede traffic (ie things with engines and a right to be there)

    Sunday?

That's the day people are allowed to park everywhere they can't the rest of week(?)

    @SRD Expansion of your point.

In my honest opinion here is the pecking order that should be in place:

1st Creatures (incl humans and horses etc).
2nd Cycles (including motor assisted ones).
3rd Internal combustion engine with driven wheels.
    4th Taxis.

(This happens to be the Darwinian Order of colonizing this planet by coincidence!)

Its a bit like the 'Law of the Air' Section IV Part 9 !
If you see wot I mean!

Pretty much every local policy document you read about transport starts with a nice piece of cut and pasted boilerplate about considering the needs of pedestrians first, followed by bikes, buses, and finally cars. Followed usually by a proposal that reflects exactly the opposite set of priorities. A particularly brazen one here actually went on to suggest removing a pavement from one side of a bridge (which didn't carry buses) to increase through traffic. Presumably the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and bus passengers were all being considered there by encouraging them to drive their cars like normal people...

So chdot!, if the punters are all parked up on the single yellows and cycling lanes then POP2 will be forced even further into the crown of the road thus creating equally as much traffic chaos as it might on a Saturday when restrictions in City Centre are enforced! Interesting spin-off concept! The invention of the Venturi Pipe illustrates this well... if you deliberately narrow a pipe you have to push a gas or liquid volume through faster at higher pressure to achieve the same result as through a wide bore pipe...

@ Sallyhinch... you are absolutely right, re-read the Cooncil's ATAP! Then roll it up and stick it in Dear Hind's ear!

    Dear Cllr Hinds,

Pedal on Parliament Protest Saturday 18th May 2013

As Convener for Transport, I really hope you will fully support this protest to be held on the Saturday 18th May, which requires to take a route through the centre of the City to draw attention to the plight of cyclists in this City, having to deal with poorly designed infrastructure and the high risks of urban traffic mixing with vulnerable cycle traffic. This protest is about making people all over Scotland aware of the daily risks cyclists take on our roads, just do do the most basic travel activities eg taking the kids to school, or commuting to work in a sustainable and healthy way! It may be that your Events Champion and Depute Cllr Cardownie might see this protest of over 3,000 mixed persons in the City as an ideal 'event' opportunity, that could be capitalised on by getting City of Edinburgh Council to actively support it.

I must also draw your attention to the fact that Andrew McNicoll, who was sadly killed on Lanark Road whilst commuting into the city centre, was the son of an employee of the City of Edinburgh Council, and I append his mother's blog from Pedal on Parliament website (below) as a pivotal statement on the state of affairs in this City. This statement has many words of wisdom, and is a telling statement on the parlous state of our infrastructure for all users.
It is sad that despite all the promises by CEC, Active Travel Action Plans, cycling initiatives, and failed investment in un-enforceable Quality Cycle Corridors etc, that the internal combustion engine still rules the minds of the officials in the Council.
I will welcome the advent of the trams as it will act as a traffic calming measure if nothing else! It might even get people out of their cars and entice them to use public transport more effectively!
My daily commute by bike in this City is becoming ever more risky and complex, and I appeal to you to get your colleagues to rally and get our act together for a safe and sustainable future for all, commuters, families, schoolchildren and tourists.

I do hope you take this note seriously please?

    Rabbit, Rabbit Rabbit......

Has the POP2 Website changed? Gather at the Meadows in Edinburgh on the weekend of the 18th of May 2013 (actual date to be confirmed). I am positive last time I checked this website it clearly stated "Saturday"??? http://pedalonparliament.org/

I think I'll just stick to the Saturday! Sunday is still a day of rest for me. Who cares if I am the only one at the Meadows on the Saturday.

Dear Tarmac jockey and friends. If you read beyond the headline, you'll find the following explanation:

If you've been paying close attention to the website, you'll have noticed that we've slightly modified our information about the date of the POP2 ride - rather than the 18th May, we are now saying that it will take place on the weekend of the 18th May. Please bear with us - we should be making a further announcement extremely soon but we can't quite confirm the date just yet.

The reason is that, although POP is a protest, it's very much a family one: if kids can't safely ride their bikes in Scotland then we'll never be a cycle-friendly nation, so it's their protest as much as anyone's. Protests don't have to be confrontational - and we're working hard to make sure that we get the same carnival atmosphere that we enjoyed last year. We also don't want to disrupt the good people of Edinburgh any more than we can possibly help so we're working closely with the police, the council and representatives from the bus companies to keep the disruption to a minimum. The benefit of this approach is that we should be able to ride this year on completely closed roads - eliminating any risk from an impatient driver. The downside is we probably won't be able to hold it on the original day we planned, the 18th, but on the Sunday instead.

We're disappointed at having to consider changing at this late stage - but that's the way the world goes, and it should mean that we can keep the fantastic route we had last year, right through the historic heart of Edinburgh. We'll be keeping you informed as soon as we know more but for now please watch this space - or sign up for our email updates - and as soon as we know, you will know

Together we can make Scotland a cycle-friendly nation.

    Now I'm extra confused.

    Council/Police/whoever 'ban' Saturday(?)

So it's Sunday(?) or is PoP considering defying the ban??

tj seems to be planning to.

Might join him if it's a sunny day.

Website was updated last night to say 'weekend of 18th May' - we will confirm the date when we have formal agreement as we can't keep chopping and changing dates and times - I'm sorry about all this, but it's a complex situation and there are lots of competing priorities to take into account - and it's not just about getting permissions, although for a family-friendly protest like POP that is a big part of it.

Of course there would be nothing to stop people from organising their own POP any day of the week they choose, or indeed all of them. But bear in mind that the more people who turn up on POP the more powerful it is, so please do join us on the day we finally announce.
