A word in favour of zip ties. They are a wonderful invention with many uses and very portable to boot.
One the way home, my mudguard came loose as the bridge clip had broken. It was a simple matter to repair with zip ties - it's as good as new.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Wonderful invention and they have many, many uses, but am I the only person irritated by the huge numbers of them left around lamp-posts and sign supports after the election/advertising posters are removed or blown away? Folk should be obliged to remove them along with their posters after the election/event is complete. They don't have to be cut as they are easy to remove and reuse.
@amir. We discovered a new use on Sunday - small ones attach balloons to bike most effectively.
@pocopiglet - we cut off all the ones we used for PoP last year
Hurrah for Zip (cable) Ties!
Z is for... by the Magnificent Octopus, on Flickr
@pocopiglet - most of the POP posters I put up last year I simply undid existing cable-ties and used them for my own posters.
@SRD and all PoP folk, sorry no dig was intended, merely a general comment. Even in rural areas you can spy huge clumps of sticky-oot plastic adorning signposts. Actually, if you want a huge number to use for your posters free of charge just a wee prod lifts the tongue of the zip tie and means it can be removed and re-used.
Kaputnik just posted before me. Well done with the recycling, that man!
These are good for undoing ZTs
@pocopiglet - no offence taken. My our point a by good one (which is why we took ours down). Hadn't thought of potential for re-use - thanks for tip.
It's a general observation that people / organisations that either aren't paying for things out their own pocket, or aren't intimately aware of the finances, generally aren't so careful about spending and what they use/re-use/discard.
POP should have got award for one of the most effective uses of shoestrings in a campaign in 2012!
How on earth do you untie a zip tie? I thought they had to be cut to be removed?
You use a pin to disengage the ratchet
It depends on the design. Some have a wee lever that can be lifted and the whole thing undone. Others you can cut on the correct side and re-use, albeit a bit shorter than the original!
A friend of mine who used to help put up election posters for the Green Party said that theirs were all tied on with string...
My mudguards are held together by zip ties.
I did see a poster on a pole on old new mills road which is quiet country hill road that ends at railway to glasgow (via shotts). it read Are you annoyed by posters on poles on quiet country roads?
The accumulation of zip ties on poles is certainly a modern phenomenon
