cycling up the hill to school. jacked up range rover needing a new muffler accelerates up behind us. then, of course, has to brake. he then winds his way through the secondary and primary kids to stop where he shouldn't and drop off kids.

I ask if he realises that it's a 20 zone. he says he wasn't going more than 20. i then comment that in that case he needs a new muffler.

what I should have said was 'why the hell were you accelerating up my rear-end, when you could see a car stopped ahead of you, and you had to brake 20 metres up the road anyway?'

argh. of course, I had finished dropping my kid and was on my way long before he'd even gotten out of his car.

Take the Reg and report to the police, School Head and Local Councillor. We do and they come round and regularly patrol the streets on approach to the school. Infact the street on aproach to the school routinely has Police Yellow Cones out to stop parents parking.

I hate to be pedantic but it's a Jacked up Toyota Hilux Surf and beleive the term for the exhaust would be "Big Bore"...... You never know it may come up n the quiz... ;-)

is it really? I have seen a hilux with similar wheels as well, but the shape of this thing looked different. but i didn't check details. has toyota changed the shape recently?

(a jacked-up pickup truck I understand (everyone drives pickup trucks where I come from). a rangerover struck me as really silly.)

Toyota Hilux. Perfect choice for the school run on narrow urban streets.

@Smudge, are you suggesting Edinburgh parents affix anti-aircraft guns, rocket launchers or heavy machine-guns to the back of their pickups as a kind of urban threat tactic to ensure they get the kids to school on time? Or maybe set up checkpoints to delay peds/cyclists out so drivers can get to school?

"is it really" Assumng it's the same one I'm thinking about. It's the only jacked up 4x4 I've seen at the school ( and I notice these things coz secretly I would love one but I would drive it with respect Honest!!) There is a guy with a Landrover discovery that has a rattly pipe but it's not Jacked up. Anyway you think that's bad I heard some parent has been OPENING THE DOUBLE GATES!!!!! ;-) power indeed to the people!

I wish I had more time and fore-thought to respond to those who insist on 'advising' me very loudly and aggressively through their open passenger windows that I should be on the cycle path/off the road/anywhere but having been in front of them with:

"My safety is more important than ten seconds of your time especially since you don't look in full control of your vehicle mouthing off at other road users."

I may start up this mantra in my head so it's automatically out of my mouth rather than the unladylike filth I normally go to for my retort.

I've definitely seen the jacked up Hilux. It maybe that the 4x4 just has monster tyres on.

Acquaintance of mine - who lives well outside the catchment - was dropping off her kids and blocking the double gates this morning. she cycles sometimes too. I don't see why she can't park a little way off the entrance like most other sensible parents do.

@Crowriver, they could... but on the other hand it wasn't a fleet of Toyota pickups that initially moved the stores down the Ho Chi Minh trail and helped defeat a well funded superpower!

One should always try to select the most appropriate tool for the job ;-)

Something I did say - to an idiot in a convertible BMW who left hooked me to get into the left turning lane was "does your father know you drive his car like that?"

He then burnt off at the lights, undertaking the traffic to go straight on...

    But I was grinning!

@Roibeard, I thought you needed a ballot box to go along with your Armalite?

That jacked up Hilux did a punishment pass on me on the cobbles on Eyre Place about a week ago. Was pretty scary having wheels that large coming so close.

I wish I had had a witty comeback, I just called him a penis. It felt pretty accurate

Hard to have witty comebacks when you're concentrating on avoiding cars and school kids with a trailer attached to the back of my bike (with toddler inside). I'm wishing for less icy mornings so I can go back to more offroad commuting!
    PS like the sandals!
