    I require a "model" :D

I have a photo in mind and I need some one (or more) to help me shoot it. My idea is based on a picture I took at Dig in a the Dock (this one) with some changes and a little more interesting lighting. I'd like to have rider slightly more centred but still very close to camera with a wide angle lens to give just a bit of distortion, the rider will be banking into a turn hopefully giving a look that the rider is about to ride over the viewer. The plan is to shoot later on in the evening so there isn't much ambient light and use the flash to light the rider and bike and give the impression of riding out the darkness.

I think what I'd prefer for this would be someone in "war gear" for this one.

I need to scout out a location but I'm thinking Harrison park should have enough of a corner on one of the paths for the effect.

It shouldn't take too long but it will have to be a dry night as I'd rather not be sitting on wet ground while I get set up. Plus I'd rather not get wet...

Any volunteers can get a copy or a print... if it comes out of course

Do you need a cyclo cross look? I'm near Harrison Park, but I'm not riding my skinny-tyred road bike through lots of mud...

    No, hoping to avoid mud!

Racer look is perfect, I'm just trying to find somewhere there is a tarmac path with enough room for me get the camera set up but still be out the way.

I'll be there just for something to do, and if you can't find a more suitable model, I'll stand in. I fear the fuzz makes me look more Audaxer than roadie, as do the mudguards on the Croix. Then again, I could use black fruity, the old Raleigh racer.

I could be game, depending on timing.

Give Monsignor W. Cow and I a nudge when you've got a time, dear chap?

I'll bring the trailer out for the various light-boxing opportunities it presents, as well as the aforementioned road devices if required.

    Excellent, thanks folks.

I'll try arrange for the next week or the week after, given next week looks to be a complete wash out..

Any one free on Saturday, Sunday or Monday? It looks to be dry and fairly calm if a little chilly.

    Posted 11 years ago #
  10. Can definitely do Monday after work - but I'm not around most of the weekend (certainly in Newcastle on Saturday, Sunday a little more sketchy).

For the Harrison Park lot I was thinking a little later so I can get home and get my "lighting gear" rather than drag a tripod and light stand in to the office but I could do on Monday, just need to find something close to the office.

Actually I probably don't need a light stand but I do need away of angling the flash on the ground for the uplight. Might need to do some hacking over the weekend.

I'm supposed to be going out on the big bike sometime over the weekend - but I don't know when yet, and when depends whether I go with a friend - i.e. I don't know if/when she wants to go.

    That's spectacularly unhelpful, isn't it?

Saturday afternoon just might be possible...

Edited to add: ah, you want dark...
I should be on my big bike tomorrow. It depends what time your definition of "after work" is.

TBH it doesn't have to be that dark, its just easier on the flash. I was thinking more after dinner than after work, its a bit easier to organise and to drag my kit out.

If Sat/Sun are easier I've not got anything on so I'm pretty flexible.

I have a Gorillapod and a cheapo tripod that I can't currently use since the block thingy that connects cameras to it has gone AWOL, if either helps. Feel free to dump the toys at mine until Monday, if that opens a Plan C.

Uberuce, even if Fimm can't make tomorrow, you busy? Might be worth going out and having a play and trying a couple of different things.

My bean bag thingy is too light to take the leverage of the flash on its receiver but your gorilla pod might be just the thing.

No plans for Friday evening, narp. I finish up at 5pm, so any time from 5.15 onwards is comfortably achieved.

Jolly good. I've been putting off recabling the brakes on the MTBeam, so that'll give some incentive to get it done in time for light box things.

What time is "after dinner"? I'll be coming back on my road bike and should appear about 6:30 - I assume that's too early?

Steveo, if you need any further lighting and I can get there let me know. Umbrellas, softboxes and spare Nikon flashes.

I suspect that one rider with several solid lights preceding a 'race' of unlit ones will make a good photo.

It can't be an actual race for safety reasons, and for exposure reasons it's better to go slowly too.

I think I need a re-shoot before I get any one else to try Uberuce...

This is the closest one to the shot I wanted but its not quite as good as the one in my head...

These two are (imo) much better but I've missed the focus point so don't look too close!

I think the fist "dynamic" turning picture needs more space and more speed so that the lean is more exaggerated. The second two would have been better shot from further away with a longer focal length so if your free at all I'd like to try that.

They look a little under-exposed. The way I read you plan the background and the rider should be more evenly lit. The way I was shown, you set the exposure for the background and then set the flash with the same settings and take your photo. The light from the flash will 'stop' the rider but both should be balanced in lighting terms.
