Curse of the right-angle

    I've often struggled to put into words my utter frustration at the urban planner's obsession with building right-angles into every single piece of walking and cycling infrastructure possible. This diagram by my friend over at Copenhagenzine illustrates it perfectly;

    It also captures that the cycle/foot path only being as good as what it's connected to.

    I think a lot of the right angle stuff is based on the concept of ensuring that fleshy bodies don't go shooting out in front of 2 tonne bringers of death. They'll argue it's a "safety first" thing, but it's also a "car first" thing.

    @PS undoubtedly some of it is that, however you only have to go near a newly "designed" housing estate or shopping shed to be confronted with the same thing - everything running in a series of endless right angles that seem to confound you ever getting where you want to go.
