Pulled up behind a car at the temporary lights on Haymarket Terrace. Bus coming the other way couldn't get through so car in front decides to reverse to let the bus through.

Unfortunately he didn't appear to see my Uber Bright 1200 lumen light, or the really high powered flashing light pointing straight at him, as he proceeded to reverse into me!

I decided to bail once my front wheel started to go under his rear bumper, so no injuries thankfully. Font wheel trashed on the bike though, but all else seems ok.

    Meh!

Hope you got his details/cash for a new wheel and tyre!
(and an airzound to complement your headlight for the next terminally unobservant car driver you have the misfortune to meet!)

    Glad no other damage!

What a numptie. Him. Not you. I thought those lights were a bit of a mess. I confess - I jumped them rather than get caught up in the mess of frustrated cars, taxis and buses.

Sounds less SMIDSY than 'sorry mate I didnt LOOK'.

Lucky you were on the ball.

Sorry to hear about the bike, hope you get it all sorted on insurance. Sorry your felow human being didn't bother to look where they were going.

    Glad you're otherwise unscathed!

Sorry again (via FB) to hear this. I learned from my driving instructors to leave a large gap between me and the veh in front incase they breakdown/reverse, and I need to pass/get out of their way.

As I eluded to on FB, check your front fork as any stress can weeken them and lead to an expensive replacement after you may have settled with the driver.

I was reversed into a few years ago when dropping my son off at the nursery on the way to work. I used to drive 30 miles each way and the only nursery at the time which had full time places was the private nursery attached to a private country school. I left 2 car lengths between me and the silver BMW driver in front when he stopped prematurely on the drive into the drop off point. He then reversed back into me whilst I was leaning on the horn. Just shows how secure we feel in our tin boxes, not ned to look as our many airbags will protect us!!.... tsk tsk

I was a bit behind him, but as I was going to have to go back a bit too, I had looked behind me to ensure there was no-one behind me before moving backwards. When I looked forwards again he was already on his way. Must admit I did wonder afterwards if theere was anything I could have done differently (not excusing him for hitting me).

I had positioned myself near his outside as I had just filtered through traffic on the outside, so if he glanced in his rear view mirror he may not have seen me, however he would have seen nothing but my lights in his wing mirror, so I don't know how he didn't spot me. He said it was the weather, and that it all happened so quickly?? I'm not quite sure how my sitting behind him for more than a minute was "all so quickly" but never mind.

He has agreed to pay for a new front wheel, but on some interwebing they only seem to come in pairs. Oh well, shame, although probably still cheaper than his excess!

I do take the point about getting the forks checked, @DaveC, is that something the guy you use in Fifeshire could do, and provide a report if necesary?

Glad to hear you're okay and the driver will pay for the new wheel.

Interesting, the what to do differently question. I had this same thing a decade back but got tripped up by the bike as the bumper encroached. Saved by the handlebars jamming under the car, I'm please to say! But obviously, it illustrated to me that I really ought to be off the bike and out of the immediate area when the car gets there. Nowadays, the moment the reverse lights go on, as they do every now and then, I'm preparing my route sideways, not doing that intermediary step of thinking we're all just politely moving back a metre. I suppose I still do move back or whatever, but the difference is that nowadays the safe exit is prepared first (hopefully).

I can just imagine the Health & Safety brigade arguing for Emergency Exit signs to be installed on all bikes.
