Ironically, I was waiting at the lights at the bottom of Leith Walk when a clatter announced the arrival of a guy with those things that slide up and down the spokes..!

The only problem is, surely they don't work once you've got a little pace on, they'll be held to the rim by the rotation?

'We' will have to do a test to see if it coincides with 'acceptable' pedestrian passing speed - and deters/attracts dogs...

"I hate the noise of those things"

I always get amused when I see them on kids' bikes, as I actually think they are completely pointless.

Don't worry, I don't think they are about to catch on as an 'audible warning' system.

I share the uncertainty about bells in previous posts.

Noisy GripShifts (moved deliberately a few times) sometimes makes curious people look round.

There are some curious people on bike paths (or do I mean mixed-use Public Realm?)

I do like to drop a few gears with a loud crunch if I really feel I have to make myself known (as a precursor to having to stop behind an obstruction and ask them to move vocally). It's quite a distinctive sound and also very neutral, unlike the bell.
