Bicycle racks at Murrayfield and Dynamic Earth

I was at a conference yesterday at Murrayfield Stadium. Having been impressed with the inclusivity of the organisers in their 'how to get there' blurb which said:

"The venue does not have a specific point onsite for bicycle parking. However, they will ensure there is an area available for those who require it but would strongly recommend people bring their own locks to secure them as it will not be a manned point."

I would counter by saying that there wasn't an area available for those who required it (implying a special area set aside), but the venue does have a specific point onsite, and it's crap. It's a set of about eight wheelbenders, to which I was extremely reluctant to attach my bike. The security team member I spoke to seemed nonplussed by the revelation that wheelbenders might void an insurance policy, that they might damage my wheels (since it was also blowing a gale), and that I would really rather they found me somewhere better. They didn't bother.

The only plus point was that the rack is well under cover from the elements. But remember that the place has about 1000 car parking places.

I'm also due to visit Dynamic Earth. I know of the set of Sheffield stands that's sort of nearby, but I don't fancy locking up my lovely and expensive bike there because I'll be in the place all day. Is there anywhere in the underground car park I can use? Is it beyond the realms of venue imagination to provide Sheffield stands in such car parks?

Murrayfield Icerink also has pathetic set of wheelbenders, which if used conventionally are impossible to lock frame to with a Dlock. At least they're fairly close to the door.

I regularly see bikes locked to the inside of the metal grilles/railings of the Dynamic Eart car park. These face the north side of the Scotsman building and can easily be accessed by a flight of stairs from street level. I haven't used them myself, but assume people just carry their bikes down there and lock them up - these is a vehicle ramp but I'm not sure it can be used by bikes.

I've noticed a trend recently to have funky "designer" sheffield racks - we've got them outside the DSB and Informatics forums, and they're wiggly - meant to hold a wheel, but in fact they just make it hard to get a decent amount of bike and rack inside your lock.

A simple inverted U of steel is fine, cheap and easy.

Arellcat, I hate these kind of posts as they just remind me of the paucity of decent racks anywhere (although I cant vouch for sheffield itself ;-) ).

I had the (mis) fortune to be at Smyths toystore out at Fort/Kinnaird whatever its called at the weekend, and they have some shockers of wheelbenders too. Rather bizarrely, they are right next to some 'designer' handrails which are shaped exactly like a.........sheffield rack which is exactly where I would lock up.

These days I pretty much just go to my destination and look for something safe/strong and which works for me.

Even in my office, I have never used the 'official' racks (relatively decent though they are) because I prefer the car park/atrium barriers which are (again) exactly like sheffields, and closer to the entrance.

Much the same here, Tesco Corstorphine has a designated place for bikes, its at the entrance to the car park is a frankly rubbish rack. I generally lock up at the trolley park near the door, feels more secure but I doubt it really is.

The bicycle store at the Informatics/DSB building has functional and perfectly ordinary Sheffield racks in it so I'm not sure why the ones outside the shed should be oddly bent.
Having said that, I had a peripheral encounter with the planning process for the Informatics half and I'm guessing that those racks were simply judged to look funky and stylish.

They were - I was quite involved with all that, and the architects had a brief to make the building look modern and funky.

I just wish the bike store was policed slightly better - I notice the problems with the funky stands on the days I can't get parked because of all the stored bikes - and like Arellcat, I don't like leaving my reasonably expensive bikes outside (and I get seriously into trouble when I park my bike in the server room)

I've complained about the wonky racks around Bristol square before - where they are parked in a slant and I've found them very hard to use. But I used the similar ones by informatics the other day, were it is flat, and they were fine. Maybe even better than a Sheffield stand for a small wheel/frame bike.

I have problems attaching my 'bent, and even the Croix can be tricky (but the stands are the least of the problems)

OT. Arelcat. Feel free to park your bike in my employers secure room under St James Centre. I can meet you when you arrive to show you how to get in and out. The entrance is via the comercial truck entrance opp the Bus station. I think I still have your number, just let me check.

    "my employers secure room"

Dave C - Are you, like, a spy or sumfink??

Always thought you remind me of jason bourne.

Hey Nelly, flattery will get you everywhere... But your not my type unfortunatley, but being compared to Jason Borne is nice!

We have a room under St James center with a key coded lock on and only those who know the code can enter. It also has staples in so we can lock our bikes up.

Oh dear - I'm going to Murrayfield this morning and this is what my google search brought up! Hoping things have improved in the last 2 years.

I was at Murrayfield at the weekend and noticed some bike racks at the corner of south and east stands. They were of the type where you insert your wheel between two loops attached to a wall, so pretty rubbish. Better than nothing though. I'd imagine the new tram stop might have some racks too.

Don't forget to take some handlebar flyers ;)

still wheel benders, but with a fence round them, i would lock to fence. I think this is a designated area and is better than just the benders which was how it was when i first went, but no change from two years ago.

More stadium staff using bikes I think. Never seen a bike rack at a football stadium. the velodrome across from parkhead has some.

Yes, "wheel benders" were all I saw today so I did chain to the fence - staff actually advised me to do that.

There were lots of bikes there too and, like mine, these were chained to fences along the entrance points.

    ah well.

(PS. @SRD what are handlebar flyers?)

There are 4 or 5 racks near the steps for the tram stop.

Also about 20 just round the bend at Roseburn Primary.

Nice, thanks. Yeah, started training for it 2 days ago, may have left it a bit late in retrospect.

    @Kenny

This training plan may work in your favour. Not training means that your body doesn't know what it's in for and can be taken by surprise.

May I recommend plodding to the 5k mark followed by an exuberant and determined effort to overtake everyone you can see in front of you for the remaining distance?

Essentially my past approach to bike touring.

Kindly edit your post to correct the flagrant apostrophe error in the quote. Can't believe you did that.
