Yes, the tag thing is pretty annoying. It would be nice if you could send up to 140 characters /plus/ tagging/topic markers (which then wouldn't have to be displayed all over the discussion - just as they aren't on every post here).

You don't have to use #.
Useful for searching topics/trends and 'fun' -

I always find the #annoyance about Twitter interesting. I mean, if I don't like a TV programme I don't watch it; if I didn't like Twitter I wouldn't go to the site...
For gathering information it can be an absolute mine of information. The hashtags work particularly well if, within your app of choice, you can set up columns on that particular tag. So I have the #edtravcyc tag set up as a specific column. Means I don't have to do a search for it every time, I just click on the column and all the latest #edtravcyc posts are there straight away.
What annoys me more is the 140 limit means people treat it like txt spk LOL. I HATE txt spk. There are times I think it's wholly innapropriate, but ppl jst cant help it. On Facebook recently there was a post in a group for my old school with the sad news of someone (who I can't remember to be hoenst, so I didn't post) dying, and there were comments galore full of "Thoughts are with ur family". When you're typing at a computer is it really that hard to type 'your', and in such circumstances is 'convenience of sending a quick message' showing you care at all?
Grrrr.
But. Twitter. Yay. I don't post a lot these days (save for an automated daily photo blog post link), but still find it an invaluable source of information and laughs.

I don't go to the site but I still have to scroll through extra long posts filled with hashtags, dates and times every time I come on this forum in which I imagine somewhere within is something relevant (or not) to the topic if I could be bothered to try and extract it.

Min - you should try following twitter on politics in other countries, especially those with languages written in other characters and/or bizarre transliterations added to the mix. NIGHTMARE!
Posted 11 years ago # -
I ignore those posts... ;)
(mind you, that's generally because I've seen chdot already posting it on Twitter - certainly the formatting makes more sense there).

Min - you should try following twitter on politics in other countries,
I'd rather stick bamboo splinters under each of my fingernails.
Thank you.

My laminating sheets went walkabout - I think I know where they are, so should get the posters up tomorrow (if the transport department hasn't finally woken up).

Sounds like Anth's way of consuming Twitter is a lot more sophisticated / useful than mine.
Feel an app search coming on...

Tweetdeck is excellent, especially on a big screen.
I've still not found a mobile twitter app that I'm totally happy with, though.Posted 11 years ago # -
On the original subject: I've exchanged a couple of robust emails with the southside councillors on this, via Jim Orr.
Apparently we will hear something via the cycle forum / Spokes in due course (on whether pedestrian crossings should be maintained when junction lights are switched off).
I'm surprised this isn't already a policy, and tempted to FOI the risk assessment that was conducted prior to switching these ones off.

Don't get the newer releases of tweetdeck (after twitter took them over) Look for one of the pre-twitter releases.
Tweetdeck was fabulous, but Twitter well and truly killed it.
I use Hootsuite on my (android) phone and Metrotweet at home.

This is not just a cycling issue - the previous crossing had a history of cars running the red lights to the danger of all MMW users.
Add to that a road layout allowing cars to scoot round the island (in both directions sometimes) was one reason why it had to be re-designed.Armed with this knowledge you'd think that some care would be taken.
Bike and foot usage of the path is so great that making people use Jawbone Walk isn't an option really - or is it? A detour for some and a shortcut for others.
Posted 11 years ago # -
I think those for whom Jawbone would be a shortcut will already be using Jawbone (as it has a crossing at the end), so I think for all it would be a detour, and quite a significant detour.
Hopefully the temporary crossing will help, but no signs pointing people to it is a pretty fundamental mistake. And coming down the path from the west (cycling or walking) you're simply met with the metal barrier, with a path running off to the left down to the road - most people last night seemed to do that, then find themselves marooned, rather than gong round the back of the works - not knowing that 50 yards away was a temporary crossing.
It's just a shambles really, no other word for it. No forethought; and poorly executed reactivity. 'Right first time' only applies to potholes I presume!

This is a wider problem than just MMW though... I often ride past roadworks on London Road, and they just close off a lane, forcing cyclists into conflict with cars, even if there's plenty of space around the roadworks for a bike lane. There is just simply no thought at all about how a bike will get past.

@AndrewDBurns @CyclingEdin @SRDEdinburgh @LAHinds This is a general problem. Bikes are simply NEVER considered when roadworks go up."

When I went through the junction in the early afternoon, a big barrier had been put up across the south end of Middle Meadow Walk. If you face south there's a sign on the barrier - I don't know what it says as I was busy going the other way at the time and didn't stop. I guess the purpose of the barrier is to hold up the sign. And I suppose the sign directs people to the temporary crossing, or tells them that the normal crossing is closed, or something like that.
However this barrier being there means that if you want to cycle on to Middle Meadow Walk, well, you can't. They've blocked it off. And there's no sign on that side to explain what the heck is going on. (OK, you can kind of jink round the side of the barrier, but all the prams, pushchairs, old ladies etc. will be doing the same.)
So, their fix for their fix for their fix is also badly broken. I wonder what their fix for their fix for their fix for their fix will be?

Edinburgh Transport Department - the gift that keeps on giving.

I notice that all that seems to be happening is that the kerbs are getting rounded off.
Plans were shown on forum - sure we commented on this before?
Should be a simple T junction now with bike lane curving round over the defunct slip? That's safest layout as slip road encourages traffic to speed onto Melville Drive heading West.

Here's hoping, I've seen cars turning to go the wrong way up that slip more than once!

Yes. Arellcat almost had a head-on two weeks ago as she met a car illegally using this handy shortcut!

Marchmont Road is much busier than Argyle Place, and works just fine as a T-junction. Why Argyle Place requires a left-turn filter lane is beyond me. I think it was mentioned in the "critique the design" thread that the filter lane was put in so as not to inconvenience cars having to wait to turn left when the crossing lights were at green.
Of course what happens is that cars speed down Argyle Place, enter the filter lane and it is pedestrians and cyclists trying to cross Argyle Place who are now inconvenienced as they have to wait for a gap in vehicle traffic.
When Melville Drive backs up, the filter lane backs up too, which then makes it difficult for cyclists to left-turn out of Argyle Place onto Melville Drive as the filter lane is too narrow for a cyclist to safely filter up to get to the bike lane. It makes a right turn out of the Meadows up Argyle Place remarkably difficult as you cannot see cars coming down the hill because of the bin and parked cars on corner, and you do not know if a car coming down the hill is going straight on or into the filter lane (at the same time you have to content with cars turning out of Melville Drive from 2 directions and cars going into and out of Sylvan Place in both directions. So you only have 6 different traffic directions to check! seven if you include someone turning into Argyle Park Terrace.)
Worst of both worlds.

is that an 'official' sign? or just one someone has done up? and is there one on the barrier thing too?
Posted 11 years ago # -
It has the logo of a certain local bicycle business, so I imagine that makes it pretty official :)
Someone has folded away all the "diversion" signs on the pavement on Roseneath Terrace as they were blocking the entire pavement.
Posted 11 years ago # -
SRD, yes there is, as of about an hour and a half ago. I saw the relevant official putting it up.
I had a look at the MMW end just afterwards, and noticed that the orange crowd barriers had a great big sign saying "PEDESTRIAN CROSSING" and an arrow pointing left, but you could barely make it out in the gloom and the orange.
Posted 11 years ago # -
duh! was trying to work out what the logo was. Obviously it didn't 'look' official, but it wasn't the one featured by Mr WC, and I couldn't think who else would've stuck one up :)
