Not cycling news (the tandem-for-two idea was shot down early on...), but delighted to report that I got married on Saturday.

So far marriage seems to consist of vast amounts of cake. I am optimistically hoping that this will continue.

  2. Congratulations on the cake!

    I see she's taken your name... ;)

Curiously, I am getting married tomorrow, maybe it is contagious. My partner will not be taking the name Mrs Gembo. in another curious twist she is keeping her own name which is often mistakenly heard as Mrs darkside. No cake so far, a fat less sponge isin the offing. Quite a bit of champagne chilling in the snow, hopefully weather will clear

Good time of the year for it gembo. My sole wish is that I'd scheduled in time for a wee 7pm nap. Good luck!

We have an understanding on the consequences of me bringing home any bikes larger than the recumbent. It would not include cake.

Not that unusual (my other half prefers her surname - as well as various other reasons); and actually traditionally Scottish (I might be wrong, but I think it was more a Victorian influence that changed that).

Strange that some really do seem to view it as a challenge to a chap's manhood (they're also the people who seem to think the good lady wife's role is in the kitchen and ironing the shirts coincidentally enough).

Congratulations Mr & Mrs Darkerside, and best of luck for you both tomorrow, Gembo!

The closest I've got to marriage is Mr MeepMeep getting down on one knee on Monday night to ask

    "Will you mmmm....ake me tea?"

    Congratulons.

Depending which documents she needs to use my wife varies which names she uses.

I tried the 'one name for professional' and 'one name for personal' thing and didn't like it at all. Too confusing for my poor head.

@Wilmington I'm surprised your good lady wife can get anywhere near your kitchen judging by amount of time you spend in it making / baking / photographing macaroons!

@Gembo congratulations to you too. I assume your wedding will have the best espresso in town?

Congratulations Mr & Mrs Darkerside and best wishes to both for tomorrow, Gembo.

Having spent my life being asked to spell and re-spell my surname, not to mention the "How do you say it?"s, I was more than happy to adopt my hubby's mundane surname. Never had to spell my surname since...bliss ( as is the marriage, of course ;-) )

We changed names, but in some respects I think it would have been nice not to.

I suppose the weirdness would be having kids that didn't share your name. Or, if you had two, they could each have a different surname but be siblings?

Congratulations to Darkersider, Gembo and their partners!

Mr + Mrs Darkersider may be sharing a bike sooner than they realise - new Circe Morpheus will need a test run.

Quite a few married people on forum, but not a dating agency as far as I know!

    Congratulations Darkerside and Gembo (tomorrow).

If men were asked to take wifes surname, it would never happen - too much hassle plus the 'manhood' thing.

I never had an issue with my wife keeping her name - it makes for good sport too when cold callers ask if I am Mr XYZ and I say 'no'.

    Thanks all.

Michelle's not sure about the whole surname thing. On the one hand as a musician/teacher she has a professional brand build up around her current surname, and on the other she currently has exactly the same name as her sister-in-law, which causes moderate confusion.

I'm utterly easy either way, although I note that we have received a number of cheques payable to Mr & Mrs DS... :p

    Hey Congratulations!!

My Missus hasn't taken my surname - as we're not married!! but I sometimes refer to her as the 'wif' when not in her company as its easier than getting strangle looks when I talk about my children....

Still makes for trouble at Christmas time when her Grandmother sends her cheques made out to Josie Crampton, as she can not cash them. :D Letters arrive from her addressed to 'Mr & Mrs Crampton' too!! PMSL!!

I occasionally pick up the phone at home to be greeted with "Hello Mr Chaplin?" to which I answer "No!", throws them for a second or two... :D

    Congratulations to all.

My boyfriend gets asked if he is "Mr fimm" quite a lot, but we had a milestone just the other day when somebody asked me if I was "Mrs Z"... incidentally if I did get married and take his name I would end up with the same name as my (would be) sister in law!

Memsahib is on her third name but has always had the same initials.

She is also the only person in the house with unique initials. Two of us even have the same name - not my idea.

    And also congratulations all round.

    Gembo… St Valentine's day?

Is that so you can remember it more easily?

Thanks to all and congrats to the darkersides

I wasn't saying it was curious that my wifie was keeping her name, she has been clear about that for the last twenty years. No the curiosity for me was that her surname is misheard as Mrs Darkside and yet she declines to swap to the simpler Mrs Gembo.

Kaps, on the espresso front I did buy some wedding coffee from valvona and corolla and it is so fine and tamps down to such a solid disc that the poor we machine cannot push the stream through it. I have had to mix in some coarser coffee

Having the same names is useful when we start to lose our memories.

    Posted 11 years ago #
  28. So you've had to de-gentrify your coffee gembo?

Mrs Smudge didn't want to lose her name so we decided to double barrel it, makes life simpler for Smudge minor's teachers etc as well when the time comes :-)

I know a couple who both changed their names to an entirely different third name.
