I'm considering renting out or selling our yellow Bernds tandem. Currently has Rohloff but may swap it out to make cheaper. Frame folds slightly. 20" wheels.

Main thing is that it can take a smaller stoker - maybe a 7 year old. Not as small or light as a Helios. Bike is currently underused and does need some TLC but working.

Hope Hydraulic disc on front. Schmidt hub maybe if wanted.

Pm if you're interested or email via LB bikes.

Ideal for going round town and beyond - quite comfy. Been all over the place Sweden, France, Denmark etc. Fairly rare too. It will go on any train once folded. New it was £2.3k but that was in 2000!

    Sounds nice.

A rental would be tempting at some point, for train-assisted tandemming...

Does sound nice. I'm wondering if a reasonably tall five year old would be able to use it on a trip to the Netherlands in summer, which reminds me that I need to get me a Carry Freedom.

    Crank shorteners?

Yes, that would probably do it. The rate she's growing you'd want to leave it until the last minute.

More recent subscribers may not know that the LB Bernds tandem was the star of the show in Velovision magazine issue 9, back in 2003.

(also featured a review of the new Burrows 8 Freight bike, as strength tested by Jess from Cyclone Couriers)

Crank shorteners are possible. Once my daughter was older we didn't need. The Circe one's are easy to fit and adjust.

I remember Chris Juden of CTC mag looking with some suspicion at the Bernds. So many wrong things in one bike (in trad terms). I am maybe going to put it up on Velo Vision ads. Here's recent pic.

Such a nice bike. If only I had the spare cash. Alas not, after a micro-splurge on audaxy beasts before Chrimbo.

It's a very low frame at the rear, I reckon a five year old would fit no bother. Crank shorteners for the wee legs though.

That's a nice looking machine. What would you reckon to it fitting a 5ft woman in charge at the front?

@Laidback, seems to me you are tending more towards selling rather than renting, would I be right? Not that I can afford it right now, just interested generally.

@instography Just possible as front post telescopes. The rear seat post is bit jammed but reckon it's still possible to put down a bit.

My crank shorteners from Circe didn't turn up today and my other Helios demo is out with another pair. Typical lack of stuff now people are getting interested!

@crowriver Yes. Hire would be ok - selling though is better.

Tandems are a bit of an unknown but the Bernds is easy to use and gives you some idea of what the Helios would be like. Steel frame though.

Have established that rear post will need cut down for 5 year olds. Will do for any test rides.
Couple of 'firmish' enquiries from here plus one from Velo Vision ads.

Price is £750 without Rohloff (Alfine 8 rear instead). £1250 with Rohloff (yes £500 as it's working nicley).
Payment can be over an agreed period - Rohloff could be worth having if you think you are going to tour on as we did. You can never have too many gears on a laden tandem - and this one is heavier than a Helios which can exist more easily on 8 gears.

    Son lighting hub - negotiable.

Been out with one forumer on a hire over a hilly route. Seat post now at level for a 5 year old and has crank shorteners and more wrap round bars from Circe.

Gears re-worked to SRAM Dual Drive. So 27 speeds now. New front and back wheels from Circe with 36H spokes. New rear brakes.

Hope disc on front. Folding frame. Rear suspension. Dynamo lights wired but hub not included (unless you want it for a bit extra).

Price is therefore set at £830. Any takers / test rider pm or email me via LB bikes site. Ideal school run bike from 5 upwards. Ride and negotiate / compare with Helios.

Link chain needs tightened (yes it works). New chain on back.

Almost sold now via Velo Vision... if anyone does want to hire a tandem this weekend just to see how good/bad it is then it will still be around.

Thought it might be a good one for the Sustrans big pedal event

Think it's heading to Ireland which seems to be a growing market. Getting picked up here hence availability!
