Do you think cyclists will be able to get away with using it?

You know, thats exactly what I thought when I seen this last night. Nice quiet road for the most part.

Nothing to stop you using it now or in the past. In fact the only time you're likely to have problem* would be if the road was actually being used as a diversion.

I suspect the convoy vehicle might be willing to carry a bike or two though.

*Actually, might not be an issue going downhill.

    Was it tarmac before?

  5. Yeah, surely you can just hop the gate and ride away. It would be an even more forward thinking move if they were to make this the official cycle route there! (and then put in place the carrying of bikes on theconvoy vehicle as suggested when the road is being used).

It is the "old road", isn't it? The one that my grandfather failed to tow a caravan up sometime in the 1930s (they were rescued by someone with a more powerful car which gave Grandpa's car a tow and together they got the caravan up. So the family story goes).

It will come under the Access Code, won't it? That was what I assumed when I cycled up the private road up Green Lowther (which I don't recommend unless you have lower gears than I did). Or will they specifically exclude it?

  8. I think this will be designated a public road rather than private, so it can be used to cycle on like any other road (i.e. no need to rely on the LRA) unless there's a specific restriction (like, say, the Bypass here).

I did that climb at the end of a praticularly tiring sportive. Trust me: There are no gears low enough for it.

@stiltskin, I think my boyfriend did that sportive one year. I walked up to the top to see him finish. That was a lot easier than cycling up it!

@Wilmington's Cow can you think of a good reason for them to prohibit cycling on it?

  11. Not at all, but then I don't makes the rules.

    Maybe email the council?

Keith Broon was on the telly last night bangin' on about how proud he was of the new road, meaning he's probably made sure to ban cyclists from it.

Shouldn't be a problem (most of the time).

"It will be used if the main road is again forced to shut"

That road has 'audax' written all over it (not literally).

Bit confusing - I always thought the A83 was called Old Milatry Road anyway?

Someone good at these things should suggest they designate it a cycle route pointing out that it'll keep all the cyclists from being in their way on the main road ;-)
Can't see any problem using it as is, and downhill could be a blast! B-)

I think it has always been tarmac. The top bit certainly was.
