I currently have Shimano Sora 8 speed system on my regular commute. I want to replace the rear derailleur - should I just buy a shimano 2300 as a more or less direct 8 speed replacement or could I equally get a 9 or 10 speed one that would work well (they are similar prices and easier to get)?

I think you can fit any shimano derailleur. I'd personally go with a straight swap replacement, and did on my Dawes recently.

A 9 or 10 would work fine, providing the cage/jockey wheel axles is/are wide enough for the chain. I had a 105 rear mech working happily with my 8-speed cassette for over a year until half an hour ago, when it jumped into the spokes.

I've a Sora 8 speed rear mech, latest type that you can have for nothing.

if you were being pedantic, you could swap out the 9 speed jockey wheels on a 9-speed derailleur for ones that are 8-speed width, but I don't really think this would achieve that much.

Thanks Tom - that's really generous! My list of debts to you is growing. I'll contact you later.

The only real difference I was able to find between my previous Sora rear mech and the 105 I picked up for half-price in the EBC sale was that the 105 could be buffed up to a lovely shine after cleansing whereas the Sora one quickly developed a layer of dark-grey oxidised cheesium.
