Sadly this is about the station not the trams...

Any improvement there is good as far as i am concerned, though looking at the clowncils road work info, its gonna be ages before road traffic is allowed through it, and there are mair mad plans afoot as far as the traffic direction goes generally.....

Haymarket has been refreshingly different in terms of big visible changes appearing that weren't there yesterday.

I guess that's largely down to the meccano-style structure being put in, but still, it makes a nice change to playing spot the difference along the tram route.

Unlike the trambles as it is apparently known, the railway has a strong culture of working to timetables and planned use of resources, largely because they know how difficult it is to drive a train round the site they want to work on, and likewise move the passengers around.

It seems a bit sad and perhaps wasteful to actually remove the old footbridge, as it could provide a facility to operate a flow-through station and provide a reserve way-out in an emergency, but there may be reasons for removing a potential maintenance liability - yet it could so deliver a route directly to Dalry road and the bus stops there.

December is a critical month for so many rail projects, just as May, when the timetables change, and you can be pretty sure that (given the track record (sorry) of Network Rail in Scotland) the work will be delivered on or before time and within budget. the start to finish delivery of an electrified Paisley Canal line (not tha much different in length to another Scottish rail project, took just 44 days, with the line totally closed for just 9 days, and cost less than half the originally forecast price thanks to some canny thinking, that has trains rolling through under a tight clearance bridge (with a neutralised section) rather than pay a huge amount to raise the bridge or lower the track. In place of CCTV they have salvaged mirrors from the Ayrshire route (where the new trains have CCTV), and cleaned the ballast rather than renewing it.

Stirling to Alloa, Bathgate to Caldercruix, and the nightly work that generally goes unnoticed. Practice as they say makes perfect, so railway works normally run to time.

@Tulyar, yes I thought it was a shame that they are taking out the old bridge, but I assumed there would be reasons.

According to some blurb I saw about this a long time ago they can't put an exit on the Dalry Road side because the road there (Brewery Lane?) is a private road. The female from the "Cockburn Association" (whatever that is) quoted in the linked report obviously hadn't read (or remembered) this as she was complaining that they aren't putting in an exit on that side.

    "Brewery Lane?"

Not quite. The chimney is a relic from the distillery that was there.

    "is a private road"

Yes. Google shows a barrier and a line of parked cars. Obviously more important than improving access to a major railway station.

"The Cockburn Association was founded in 1875. It is named after the late Lord Henry Cockburn (1779-1854) who campaigned to protect and enhance the beauty of Edinburgh."

Some regard it as being a busybodying impediment others appreciate what it has achieved/stopped.

I don't know why a Dalry exit would have to go via the private lane. Why not just build above the tracks and open straight onto Dalry Road (and at the same time open up a nice big pedestrain concourse behind the pub).

Haymarket revamp bosses dubbed ‘daft’ on entrances

Campaigners from Sustrans Scotland, Living Streets Scotland and Transform Scotland have sent an open letter to Network Rail, which is overseeing the redevelopment, questioning why pedestrian access from the Dalry side of the station has not been included in the plans.

The other reason of course was the need to provide a 21st century transport facility fit for all with great access and passenger amenities (https://twitter.com/HaymarketStn/status/314036186488381440)

@HaymarketStn So why does your "21st century" station feature no exit to Dalry Road? http://t.co/fxPlWMsv7h @livingstreets @SustransScot

@HaymarketStn This is a major flaw in your project. If this was a road scheme, you would have used CPO powers. @livingstreets @SustransScot

@TransformScot @livingstreets @SustransScot Clearly it is not a road scheme and we do not have any CPO powers that we could have used !

What a great example of the overwhelming lack of vision and complete jobsworthness of the project - not even trying to do something because it might be a bit difficult, the same as their "21st century" station doesn't offer any more bicycle racks because it wasn't part of the project. Or whatever rubbish reason they used.

Any engineering project with the budget of the Haymarket redelopment should have given serious consideration to alternatives if the retail unit (a dingy takewaway which wouldn't take much to buy out) or the status of the access lane were blocking such a positive development. Or considered an alternative, such as a cantilevered walkway along the retaining wall (on railway land), with an entrance on the corner of Dalry Road and Distillery Lane.

In days of yore I'm sure there was an entrance on the Dalry Road side, but I'm not sure where it ran from/to.
