Due to rain today, the parents dropping off at the tower nursery at Gillespie x-road were a bit skittish, double parking, pulling out then topping suddenly as they thought a space might come up a little nearer the gate. I was watching one as I came through the x-roads this morning, shoulder checked that I was good to go in outside lane, taxi bearing down, indicated I was heading right, shoulder checked again, he was letting me out, gave him my hand flung in the air move after I overtook the parent, meant to indicate appreciation, as he then passed me, he gave me a wee friendly toot and a big thumbs up, ain't that nice

If they weren't in metal boxes, it would be so much easier to thank them...

I had a similar experience yesterday near Melville St, guy saw me coming about 30ft away, and DIDNT try and get round the corner ahead of me, he sat and let me pass, and returned the smile and thumbs up i gave for his gracious and considerate behaviour.
A good story follows a good story, i like!

I've got a feeling that my regular commuting times are making me a fixture on my route. This morning and Wednesday too I was given space to change lanes prior to the Gorgie/Stenhouse right turn before I'd even shoulder checked or changed line within my lane. I guess it could just be two very considerate/cautious/cyclist drivers on two days, but it was so far before the turning that I reckon it's feasible they're regulars at that time too and thought 'it's that bloke with the beard who always turns right here. Bit old for shorts, isn't he?'

I think there's a definite bonus in being distinctive and a regular ficture on a route, assuming that you generally ride 'well'...

I realised to my surprise a while back that most of the taxi drivers in Helensburgh know me even when I'm not on the recumbent. Given I'm often completely swaddled up in clothing, I can only assume this is down to the stripey hat I always wear.

PS: swaddled. Real word? Feels right.

I encountered a very nice and helpful taxi driver on Wednesday. However, it wasn't due to his careful driving while I was cycling, but instead because he was more than willing to lift my bike into his taxi and back out again when I got to A&E. I'd broken myself again, and there was no chance I could have managed without his help. Thanks, Mr Taxi Driver - I don't know your name or taxi cab number as I was in too much pain to check, but he is a credit to his profession.

Superb driving by a taxi just now. Heading along the Glasgow Road, wanting to turn right up Craigs Gardens, but I managed to time it badly when turning round to discover a solid line of vehicles in the outside lane, tightly packed so there was no chance I could force my way in (IMHO). However, 2nd vehicle was a taxi, who

    • slowed,
    • flashed his lights,
    • blocked both lanes by moving over the centre line, and
    • waited for me to make my way over before speeding up and unblocking a lane

All in the space of about 3 seconds.

Kenny - a true professional driver.
    They do exist!
As you say his courtesy was ten times quicker for everyone than the aggressive alternative.

Had positive encounters with quite a few taxi drivers Edinburgh & Glasgow, who I would class as good professional drivers. To balance that, had many negative encounters with taxi drivers in both cities for whom description "professional" would be very elastic.

Even had encounter with two different taxi drivers at the same time in Glasgow, the good driver commented to me that "we are not all like that", refering to the bad taxi, I did reply that I was reporting the bad driver and he should too. dont know the outcome.
