As part of my continuing canal theme I took a spin out to Hillend Reservoir this morning.

The cycle path stops in Airdrie somewhere and uses the pavement till just east of Plains so it's not ideal for those who are scared to use the road. I'm sure this was meant to be sorted out a couple of years ago.

East of Pains it's not too bad, nice surface, but has been compromised by some road works which have muddied it up a bit and made my front brake noisy.

It goes back onto the road at Caldercruix with the usuall signpost confusion in places. When it returns to a dedicated route it has a sea of glass so I got off and walked as I've stopped using Mrathons for the spring and was running on Kojaks.

The reservoir was nice enough. Looked like an earthwork which has been augmented with concrete sometime since the late 18th century.

I came back along the A89.

Is hill end on route 75? If so, we stopped there and had a caramel log and a cup of tea from the angler's cafe. Seem to remember finding the path just after the football ground and being off road all the way to Livingston?

I didn't see a cafe but yes, the track goes right beside Hillend. There was a closed marina.

I suspect you were able to use the section east of Drumgelloch which is now railway. It was supposed to be sorted out by now.
