“This contrasts sharply with what appears to be maladministration in favour of a well-connected developer who wants to build a massive block of supermarket-sized retail units in the same area.”

    "
    "
“Weaknesses in pre-planning consultation and imbalance in appeal rights can make people feel powerless in influencing the shape of where they live.”

Frank Spratt, Accies’ executive chairman, said: “I have been involved in building and developing for over 30 years and any dealings I’ve had have always been open and professional. This one is no different.

    Corruption and rugby in Edinburgh?

    Well I am very shocked.

    (No I'm not)

A city council spokesman said: “We are aware of the complaint, which will be dealt with in line with standard council procedures.”

In other words the complaint will be filed in the big grey filing tray with the swing lid.

There seems to be quite a 3-way stooshie growing between Grange, the Accies & the council judging by the FoI docs linked in the comments.

It sounds rather like the council are being sued so that party A has a better chance of being able to ransom off the offending strip of land to party B at a higher rate of return.

That strip of land is effectively worthless (apart from ransom value) to its owners, they should just transfer ownership to the Accies and be done with it.

Surprised someone comes to such an unqualified conclusion, presumably based on a brief *EEN* article.
100 members of A sat through 4 hours of information on the issue at EGM and 64 of them concluded that the land had value.

Clearly the land has real financial value - especially if (as I understand the article) the ex-wall is legally the same as an intact wall.

Suing CEC is just a tactic!

    "

In a complicated strategy, they are taking the council to court and suing it over its failure to maintain the wall, which was under the local authority’s care.

Yes, the 1912 document binds the council to "erect a new wall & maintain it for all time coming".
Not to demolish it in 2014 on spurious safety grounds & leave it derelict in collusion with Accies. The council officials have been acting outwith their remit on the development (similar behaviour to the scandalised/defunct statutory repairs department.)
Note that originally the campaign was to get CEC to rightly extract full value for the 6-foot strip for the benefit of the city purse. But Grange are suddenly baddies for doing the exact same thing for their members.

He said the ruling made it look as if the Grange had lost. “But actually, in cricket terms, it’s a googly – it’s going to break the other way.

If the development does end up with nine big shops, it's probably goodbye to the remaining wee independent places in Stockbridge. Just what we need in Edinburgh - more identikit chain outlets harvesting value for shareholders.

In his e-mail Mr Spratt referred to a comment by Grange member Douglas Lowe that the ruling by Lord Boyd would turn out in cricketing terms to be a “googly” and would break the way of the Grange. Mr Spratt said: “Make no mistake, the Grange has been clean bowled, with the middle stump and bails sent flying. No doubt the ‘Old Guard’ members will continue to huff and puff to try and justify their follies but this decision has left them impotent.”

It is understood Mr Lowe paid around £12,000 for the strip and has agreed to give the Grange Club half of whatever price he might obtain for it.

Mr Lowe said he thought the £1m estimate for the land undervalued it.

Last year, Accies chairman Frank Spratt attacked the “greedy old men” of the Grange Club over the ransom strip claim.

“Regardless of anyone’s opinion on the merits of the Accies development, this erection of a fence on the public realm, that serves no purpose, is an affront to all the regulations and laws that are in place to protect a conservation area, protect trees and ensure that any developments, regardless of where they are in the city, go through an approved process,” said independent Inverleith councillor Gavin Barrie.

Security lights in the building compound have been angering me - poor Inverleith Pond is now floodlit all night at the east end, and I fear for the bats & night-flying insects.

Half-built stands also lit up quite unnecessarily - I hope this isn't a harbinger of how they will always look from the park at night. (Yes the pitches are floodlit at times, but mostly only when they're actually using them!)
