Edinburgh's exercise dodgers knew all about the roadwork's and subsequent congestion likely in this area, did they find an alternative mode of transport or different route? No!! They as usual, sat on their large idle bottoms, firmly strapped to a car seat, spewing out cancer causing pollution and causing business suppressing congestion, and of course at the same time blaming everybody but themselves for all the chaos in the area! Have they ever given any thought for the poor people who live in this area?"

Typical tone to many commenters but atypical sentiment? Possibly just trying to wind up the wind up merchants. Everybody is so wound up these days

If you make the mistake of reading the comments on the News/Scotsman sites, you will always come across the words "tram", "clowncil" and "Lesley Hinds", regardless of their relevance to the article above! Any time I give in to stupidity and actually scan the responses I see the same posters' names repeatedly, people who obviously have nothing better to do than exercise their keyboard egos.
As for the article itself, it's a non-story really as the fines will be quashed. A boo-boo but nothing more. The only issue is that those who have paid early will not be contacted, which does seems unfair if they are not aware of what they did(n't) do wrong. I don't drive,so I don't know what info would be included with such a fine.

A hostile press is a hindrance to local government, decisions are made sometimes with an eye to what the Scotsman / evening news might say. Dissent is fine, but a default setting of hostility is wearing. When I lived in Glasgow the press equivalent herald evening times did occasional investigations into corruption etc but there wasnenough going on to sell the papers without a lazy default of bashing the local authority.
I did of course buy the samizdat publication The Glasgow Keelie which was published to expose Pat Lally the council leader and to take the mick. It was often quite funny and in the tradition of Alexander Petrie the Glasgow Clincher who was the only certified sane man in Glasgow
The indignation of our local newspapers Scotsman/een is hopefully not reflective of the opinion of our citizens, we live in a great city and benefit from the tail end of social welfare (free education, free health service) so whilst there is much to object to (and we can articulate our objections thanks to the decent education we have received) there is much to be happy about.
