Hey, I love all the Dalmeny Estate hills myself, and the best bit is the lack of motorised traffic most of the time (and no 20mph limit on Widow Maker to spoil the downhill direction!). It all certainly is a good way to practice hill climbing, and as I say, without much annoyance from traffic.

I'm not loving the Widdow maker at the mo, It hurt tomorrow even with the wind!! Might try for a better use of gears tonight!

No doubt due to unseasonably cold weather. Or something.

    no... but probably soon-ish... maybe.

anyway its all due to be completed by March 2014, so lets say that will slip to around summer 2015.

best get acquainted with the B800 / Standingstane Road route.

I'll post on here the day it starts as I cycle that way every weekday!

The alternative we take on the way home is through Dalmeny Estate - which is where the diversion will take us. Its only a km further and a much more plesant ride!

    CEC says -

    "

a revised start date has now been confirmed for this. We expect the contractor to be on site for 6 weeks from 6th May and diversion will be in place for that period.

Alternative routes from Dalmeny railway station towards Edinburgh.

Dalmeny railway st - Dalmeny village - Standingstane rd - Burnshot road, Burnshot junction/flyover. 6km. ridewithgps route here

Dalmeny railway st - Dalmeny village - Main Street - Dalmeny estate - Turn left at foot of hill - upto Burnshot junction - 6.2km. ridewithgps route here

Second route is a lot quieter and misses Burnshot road. Warning The T junction os Standingstane Road and Burnshot road (unlisted on most maps) is at the foot of a steep hill. From Standingstane road - on to Burnshot road the T junction forces riders to stop/slow. The hedges and grass on Burnshot road sides mean riders should take care at the junction as traffic emerging from the disuces railway bridge (from Kirkliston) come pretty fast!

Standingstane Road is my preferred route to Dalmeny/Queensferry most of the time. It's a nice road. Fine on the way into Edinburgh, left turn. Keep your wits about you on the way out though: right turn in the face of potentially fast moving traffic.

I was cautioned by the police at that junction; I think that's the only time that's happened to me.

I turned left in front of an approaching Police van without stopping. I must have been about 8 or 9 at the time. I didn't want to admit that my brakes weren't working very well so made an excuse about not understanding give way lines (as if that was somehow better).

took my swansong thru the trench today for old times sake

won't miss that nonsense heading home in the winter rain lashed oncoming headlights at eye height malarky

Yes I won't be riding through there again. I've not ridden through the trench into traffic for quite some time. Heading to work we ride through it as its most direct but home time, we have cx bkes and ride along the coast.

update on the A90 Cycleway upgrade for which construction will shortly commence. Due to a minor delay in obtaining the Temporary Traffic Regulation Order required for the path closure, work will now commence on Monday 20th May 2013. As such, the pedestrian/cycle diversion route through Dalmeny Estate will be in force from the Monday morning, and it will not be possible to use the existing path through the works.

Are the people responsible for getting this work underway the same ones who decided the original schedule of the tram works? <whistles> I hope they have better control of the budget! :-D

One lane of the dual carriageway was closed when we drove past on Monday. My b/f joked that we'd better not tell the motorists that it was for a cycle path upgrade!!!
    ;-)

What exactly are they doing to the path, do we know?

Passed this morning. There's been some repairs to the estate's retaining wall and some of the thin tarmac path has been dug up (presumably for widening), more trees/bushes removed. Sorry, traffic wasn't heavy enough to let me go slow enough to have a good gawp.

Passed on the bus today & there were a number of confused folk around the closed section who had obviously passed all the "path closed" & "diversion" signs. One couple who were right at the northern end seemed to be in the process of getting their bikes around the Heras fencing - bus was going too quickly to see much though!

This is a quick clip as I passed by on the bus. Some progress, looks like the path will be very wide and very close to the road carrageway.

Passed it also this morning on the bus, looks nice and wide at one point but the dip between the walls doesn't look as if its getting raised so still a bottleneck.

Was hoping they would raise it to the height of the road side wall therefore making it wider!

    Welcome zesty (first post).

Are you one of the Fife dwellers who cycles in some day(s) most weeks?

There are several on here already!

Can't understand why folk are 'confused' when diversions are quite clear! Sleeping whislt cycling is not good ;-)
I love the diversion; Damlmeny is like a wee safari en route to work!! Delighted with the upgrade work although will miss the sheep, squirrels, geese and fresh air! Happy that there has been an investment and hope for more. As for the bottleneck, well really, not that big a deal.

Hi, I am indeed one of the Fife dwellers, cycle in from FerryToll (when feeling energetic) and South Queensferry (when not).

Usually cycle 2 or 3 times a week.
I'm a mountain biker but have resorted to cycling into work due to the roadworks on Queensferry road a couple months ago.
