Path is open but they've not cut back the growth at the top of the path, south side. It's a bit jungle-ous.

what's the hampden on the northbound ex-trench too-low crash barrier bottleneck, then ?
i can't check it personally til later this week
Posted 11 years ago # -
Hampden?? Is this Scottish cockernay??
Its narrower than the new filled in section, correction its the narrowest part of the filled in section but its still wider than the rest of the 'old' path.
**** WARNING ****
At the bottom of the hill, north end, where the path narrows, it looks like they have put more supports on the Armco barrier on the road side of the path. They have left them exposed!! Edges are open to cut/gash shins if you ride too close, for example if you were riding in the dark, facing bright lights of on coming vehicles, and someone comes the other way, and you move over to the left to let them pass. I'm sure* the council / planners / designer thought of this when they left sharp edges exposed and shin height.
* NOT!!

Council says -
"
we will be putting reflective tape on the supports for the vehicle restraint barrier to highlight the barrier in the dark, while we are also looking to provide tubing to the rear of the barrier to prevent contact with the supports themselves. This would be similar to the tubing to the rear of the barrier over the River Almond at Cramond.

@DaveC "Hampden Roar" = "score"

@chdot,
Is this the council admitting its opened prematurely?
Posted 11 years ago # -
Not exactly -
"
The Council held a site walkthrough with the contractor this morning and the works are now complete. The path was reopened this afternoon and the temporary pedestrian/cycle diversion route through Dalmeny Estate was removed. There are still a couple of minor snagging issues outstanding but nothing that will require path closure. As you may be aware, we now intend to focus on the delivering improvements to the path section between the Burnshot junction and Section Four, which will include widening and resurfacing of the path. In the meantime I have asked the local Area Team to cut back all vegetation which is overhanging this section of the path.
"
It's just a "minor snagging issue"
Posted 11 years ago # -
Ps I only got that this morning, but presumably written on Friday(?)
Perhaps path should be closed at night until work is done...

They may appear quite minor, if you're a CEC planner.
If you use this route daily, then the crash barrier bottleneck is a major problem.
SPOKES please take note:
This is not "high quality". This is negligent.

No need, I'm sure a few cones put inbetween the uprights would be enough to mark the hazard.
The narrow is not as narrow as some parts on the Number 1 path, and not as narrow as it was.

Do you want to borrow a tape measure?
Posted 11 years ago # -
I'm glad to hear they are going to put reflective strip on the inside and tubing to prevent contact. The widened path at this point encourages faster cycling going north out of town, potentially a recipe for a head to head crash with slower cyclists coming up the hill going south. Some warning signage would help. Used it this morning, the new surface helps get you up the hill faster (as well as downhill)!
What do they mean by 'Section Four'?

"Do you want to borrow a tape measure?"
No thanks, I own several.
JohnS (hi again, not seen you much on the road in a while (apart from last week)0. I think this new resurfaced section is 'Section 4'. Someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.

"I own several"
Can you use one to see how narrow new path is?
Presume there's 'path' and 'narrow bits caused by barrier supports'?
Posted 11 years ago # -
I'll dig out a tape this eve and see what I can do tomorrow. Are there no detailed plans on the web somehwere?
Posted 11 years ago # -
Plans maybe.
Execution is what counts!

I'm probably about to get myself into trouble ;), but I thought the path was much improved coming in this morning. I'm looking forward to the rest of it getting done.
Although, home run will still be through estate.
Posted 11 years ago # -
Yeah, I think it is improved. You don't have to go through that DeathStar trench anymore which I think was the worst part, especially in winter with less light.
I however have now gotten a taste for the alternative routes so might not always take that straight through.

Phoooootoooooossss!
It was a deathstar trench, wasn't it?!
Re film references, I was forever concerned about hubcaps taking my head off, Oddjob-style.

Its pretty wide now, and the cooncil have placed a few broken barriers and cones along the bottom of the widened section where the new Armco supports protrude. Further up the barrier does not butt up against the path and the armco is on the (to be) grasses muck area. Where its narrowest the armco is butt up against the path. The muck is yet to be grassed or seeded, and they are still to cut back the overgrowth further up the hill.
What I think is missing is a fence. I know there was limited fencing before but with no grass it looks very exposed. To be honest, even where the path is flat betwen the newly paved/widened section and the old A90 where it splits off towards SQ, it would benefit from a wire fence, as it would add confidence, though a wire fence would do nothing to protect any path users from speeding traffic a couple of feet away.

Where its narrowest the armco is butt up against the path
how wide is the path at this point?
Posted 11 years ago # -
It's narrowest at the top of the hill, south end that's not had any work on it, from the bus stop along to the top of the hill. That part remains unchanged. It then widens on that downslope going north to theoretically allow three abreast. It then narrows to about comfortably two abreast where the trench was where I infact passed someone this morning quite easily. When you get to where the end of the trench would have been going northwards, it reverts back to no changes along the section that goes directly level and beside the A90.
I'll get a photo of it tonight on the way home.

The path photos...
Going Kingdom bound on my way home.Posted 11 years ago # -
thanks for that
last photo:
width-wise the ex-trench is not quite as bad as i feared, to be fair
will use it in the winter months
second from last photo:
far too easy tumble over the shin height crash barrier and down the brief slope onto the A90, though.
someone's going to fall foul of that, someday

Useful photos.
It's so long since I have used that route that I don't know what the key 'improvement' is.
Presume this replaces the very narrow bit next to the wall?
In my view the nastiest bit was where the path went right next to a very fast road without even a crash barrier.
This seems unchanged(?)
Not my idea of 'fun', 'safe', "high quality" or where I would choose to take children or go at night.
Am I missing something??
What is that fence for?
Posted 11 years ago # -
For me the key improvement is the filling in of the trench. Used to look like this....

Hello Chaps!!
I took my trusty tape measure and braved the whizzing cyclists this morning to get some measurements, and a couple of photos.
At the end of the armco, the barrier support to the stone wall is 190cm and the Armco to the new fence on the estate side (to prevent falls over the wall which has a high drop on the other side) is 180cm.
