Nice little map (with some explanatory text) about BBQs in Meadows and Bruntsfield links

People very worked up about this, so if you think it is a good thing and live in the neighbourhood, would encourage you to contact your community council and tell them so.

I'm surprised the whole park wasn't destroyed the moment the first barbeque was lit!

(Seriously though. Why don't people just balance the BBQ on a couple of bricks, instead of trashing the grass?).

I'm not sure how realistic it is to expect the "hundreds" of BBQs to use 12 slabs, after all.

I wonder where people will get the bricks from... not many lying around and if provided they would soon end up littered in gardens and put through windows

<quote> there was heated debate as to whether they should be allowed at all </quote>

    Boom-boom.

@RJ I spotted that too - laugh? I almost did...
BBQs are already prohibited, problem is there is nobody enforcing it and since the disposables are available at every petrol station and shop that sells sausages they are far too freely available and tempting for people to buy, nothing will stop them, there will be more and more of them until the entire park is belching so much smoke we can go back to being "auld reekie" again

How successful this is may well affect decisions in other parks too....

Expecting people to use 'designated areas' makes it easier to police/control - and avoids both extremes -- the totalitarian 'no fires anywhere/anyhow'and the anarchistic 'let us do whatever we want even if it harms everyone else's enjoyment'.

On a more serious note, isn't it a bit odd to worry about a few patches of scorched grass when, every summer (or more often, recently) we allow huge trucks to drive all over the meadows, and marquees etc. to be erected?

I suppose the difference is that tearing apart the grass to drive a truck over it is a society "good" whereas people enjoying themselves independently is a society "bad"? This is Edinburgh, after all...

The issue of the trucks and the fairground rides and the marquee for the lady boys is already a hot topic and being pursued, bbqs are not yet. A "few" patches of scorched grass gets added too every weekend until few become many...

    The Glasgow rules have this:

Hang linen, or other material, beat, shake, sweep, brush or cleanse any carpet, rug, mat or other article.

But the Green has a drying area with poles beside the People's Palace.

You’re invited to a *COMMUNITY PICNIC* at the North Kelvin Meadow on *Sunday 18th July 2010 from 2pm* (and onwards into the afternoon).

You’ll need to bring food and drink to share, and things to sit on (rugs, chairs, etc). There will be music and bands, fun and games, a bric-a-brac stall, and lots of your friends and neighbours from the local area. So come along and meet up!

There will be information about the campaign to stop the development on the Meadow too, and you’ll get to see our lovely Meadow at its best (hopefully the sun will be shining!).

*If you’d like to help organise the event*, or want to bring along some bric-a-brac for the stall, reply to this email. Also do email us if you can help with any other aspect of the Campaign to save this land from being sold for flats as its always been used for the local community.

There is also the regular meet ups on 2nd and 4th Sunday's of the Month at 2pm where we do what we can to spurce the place up (plant flowers, paint, pick up litter etc)  - so the one this coming Sunday would be good to go along if you want to help out get ready for the 18th.

We can’t wait to see you there!

    /Kate & Emma/

I didn't pick up on this at the time, but it's an interesting example of how you can get proper 'scope creep' going on behind your back.

For example, under this scheme you can be banned from all parks (and second time around, arrested and prosecuted) if you "behave in a way that causes annoyance to any other person".

This means that, strictly speaking, you could be convicted if you ride a folding bike (I find their silly looking small wheels annoying) or heaven forbid, if you have a religious belief or even skin colour which someone, anyone, finds annoying.

    Hmm.

genius! why can't we have these "slabbed areas" in Harrison too?
4 really well placed burned squares around the base of a tree next to the path, can't miss 'em...

"why can't we have these "slabbed areas" in Harrison too?"

    Suggest to CC...

    Or just to CEC.

well, no. that's not true. some in the CC are opposed, but I don't think they had a proper debate on it (and what they did have was on bruntsfield). At more recent meeting it became clear that some claims made about what is legal and what is not were somewhat misleading.

it might be worth having a proper discussion of it at CC, including perspectives from council officials, and police, rather than kneejerk responses. FOHP voice would be taken seriously, i think (if they came to a meeting)

Map with some pics from my first Everytrail including the defunct water fountain and the BBQ signage and the wonderful spraypainted slabs. They look OK and I for one would welcome them in Harrison Park too

  28. FOHP don't need to speak to CEC instead of CC. They PDQ need an VIP to have a word on the QT ASAP. IMHO BTW.

Quietly tending a Saturday afternoon picnic, I must henceforth oppose burned turf wholeheartedly.
