I will have the chance to cycle to Glasgow next week. I don't fancy the twisting Route 75 and its broken glass paved surface or the canal (both of which I have done in the past).

Does anyone know any decent routes suitable for a road bike? All suggestions gratefully received.

I just use the A89. Not very scenic but direct and simple.

I'll got a ridewithgps route that goes the other way - you could flip it quite easily.

Was OK from memory. Although I can't remember if that was the planned route or my eventual track...

If wind remains from east then Mr Darkside's route reverse is a good one. If wind from the west, better to take train to Glasgow and cycle back if that is an option?

May I offer the following alternative route to Livingston:

    ?
This is my usual "long commute". It keeps you off the A71 which is busier than the A70. I think it might be a bit more direct through Livingston, too. You can also use the Long Dalmahoy Road route between Balerno and Kirknewton which is on even more minor roads, quieter and more undulating rather than one big hill, but more twisty.

All I need now is some reasonable weather.

Avoid route 75 unless you have a spare day to spend trying to navigate it and pull buckfast bottles out your tyres.

I nearly went to Glasgow today. Wasn't supposed to be that way. Went from Balerno to Broxburn then over to ecclesmachan and oatridge, down kings cavil, bit icy. Linlithgow then up to cairnpapple and throught the Bathgate alps to torphicen. All ploughed and bit of new Tarmac up there. Went a bit wrong over the top to blackridge, not passable for cars, we carried bikes in places where the drifts were heavy. Over to harthill and then planned to do fala hill to fauldhouse but it was also impassable so back to blackridge then on to airdrie before coming home (on the train) well went to Edinburgh park and had the helpful east wind behind me again to ravelrig hill.

So I wasn't the only cyclist in this village for a brief period yesterday.

Not seen much snow. I've been using Kojaks with no ill effects.
