UCL Cycle Health study

    Via British Cycling, I discovered that University College London were running a study into the effect of cycling fitness on health and disease.

    It's via a survey for cyclists who cycle more than once per month.

    Their description is below.

    We are asking all regular cyclists (cycling once per month or more) to complete a 10-minute questionnaire on their cycling habits and their health. Please visit the website to find out more about the study and complete a questionnaire to win £100 cycling vouchers.
    Who are we?
    University College London, in collaboration with the CTC and British Cycling, is undertaking the largest most comprehensive study into the effect of cycling fitness on health and disease in the UK population.

    What are we trying to find out?
    It is well established that exercise can reduce the risk of diseases such as heart disease, stroke and cancer. However, it is less understood how much exercise, what kind of exercise and what intensity of exercise reduces these risks in the population. Cycling is increasingly popular and the aim of this study is to compare people’s cycling fitness against their health.

    Who do we want to hear from?
    We want to hear from regular cyclists, i.e. those who cycle more than once per month.

    What do you have to do to enter the study?
    Please follow the link to our questionnaire. The questionnaire has been designed to identify key indicators of cycling fitness and health status. The questionnaire will ask whether you have been diagnosed with certain conditions in the past. All information is fully anonymous and protected by University College London.
    What’s in it for you?
    This study is the largest study into effect of cycling on health and disease ever performed and it could help to answer the following questions:

    • How much cycling is necessary to reduce the risk of disease such as stroke, diabetes and cancer?
    • What level of fitness is associated with reduced health risk?
    • Who benefits the most from cycling?

    Done. Didn't think the questions on injury were particularly well catered for: I damaged ligaments in both knees from poor bike set up, then sustained concussion, soft tissue damage and ligament damage when I was knocked off my bike. The options didn't seem to allow any differentiation between accident and incident or for selecting more than one injured area in one 'injury' so hoping the results don't become too skewed.
