Also watch out for the loco movement on Saturday afternoon/evening when FS comes up from York:

and then heads out to Millerhill for the night:

Lots of little movements aside from the main events chdot linked to already.

And perfectly timed for trainspotting whilst commuting!

Wondering whether to head out to somewhere like Longniddry tomorrow evening to watch, or maybe rendezvous at Waverley.

Thanks chdot. Your warning gave me time to scurry to Bruce Street where I wait in anticipation. I assume the helicopter overhead is the Network Rail one that the BBC was talking about.

Flying Scotsman by andy a, on Flickr

Found a good spot at Forrester where the Fife and Glasgow lines diverge. We got treated to a blast of the whistle too :)

Saw the back of it twice from my living room, the first time I'd been waiting for five minutes left the room came back and seen the diesel flying past. Second time my wife shouted me through in time to see the diesel...

Twice at our allotment this afternoon, then we saw the distant smoke from our sitting room twice this evening. Most fun for toddler was watching the helicopter ("wahadida") though.

The boy was most excited as it approached, but we were down below the track level on a curve at our vantage point so got a lot of metal-on-metal noise from the wheels of the carriages as it flew past. The boy didn't like that one bit and the 2 wee signal flags were used to cover his face instead of salute the passengers.

I pointed out to him later that covering his eyes isn't the best solution to the presence of a loud noise.

I went out yesterday evening to Freelands Road to see FS along the embankment between Newbridge and Roddinglaw. Took the tripod and everything, perfectly set up for taking some video.

Everything was going great. I wasn't in a rush, I was warm, and then in a moment of madness about five seconds before FS arrived I fiddled with the camera settings which inadvertently switched off the video mode. But I refocussed and hit the record button and did a great pan/zoom as FS steamed past.

Except that I didn't actually manage to record any video of FS, except a static five second clip of Roddinglaw farm in the distance! I fumed all the way home.

That's a shame. It happens - I've video'd a lot of my own footware in past.

I fumed all the way home.
Not as much as FS though!

We ended up in the B and M car park as the early running didn't give us other options. Not a great vantage point and similar to Arrelcat my memory card had somehow become write protected so no pictures. The toddlers lived it, though the was no helicopter competing as we were so near airport.

Does anyone know if there was any footage from the helicopter? It sounds like it might have just been NR patrolling rather than videoing - the Forth Bridge footage I've seen came from a drone.

I presume the helicopter was for spotting lineside trespass (and possibly lineside fires).

Any filming would be 'for evidence', but certainly would be a good opportunity for 'iconic shots'.

On the 4 passes we saw, the helicopter was way ahead (scoping out trespassers etc.) so probably not close enough to do any decent filming for much of the time.

Drone and helicopter footage doesn't do it for me. Technically impressive but sterile as the audio has to be muted (or even worse, 'inspiring' lift music overdubbed)

Far more wholesome are all the amateur videos on Twitter of families getting really excited as it passes with a good roar and a whistle.
