Given the choice, I prefer a Stanier over a Gresley:

SRPS tried to run one of their Forth/Fife Circle tours behind Duchess of Sutherland a few years ago, and had to substitute Tornado late on because of "gauging issues" with 46233. Nice to see it getting a run up here. I'm tempted to turn out to see it crossing the bridge. Not being such a crowd-puller as 60103 it might even be possible to get a pic or two from the platform at North Queensferry or Dalmeny.

Which reminds me. What's happened to uksteam.info (a resource I learned about through CCE!), as it seems to have stopped? Is there an alternative source of future trains?

Asking mainly because I've got a holiday cottage on the Settle to Carlisle line shortly, and want to know if there are any interesting things to look out for.

    “What's happened to uksteam.info“

    Indeed

Found something similar, but can’t find it again!

Also, for FS, not sure when it appeared on RealTimeTrains, but clearly there was an attempt to disguise trains as each trip had a notional different destination in Fife.

    Try these:

    http://railwayherald.com/railtours ('not secure' i.e. doesn't use https)

https://www.railadvent.co.uk/eventscalendar ('secure', but I don't find it particularly easy to use)

    http://www.railtourinfo.co.uk/index.html (again 'not secure')

I agree that uksteam.info used to be the best source.

FS went to 'Joppa Straight' after the last run yesterday, so presumably that means one of the Craigentinny depots.

FS (presumably, given WCRC) comes back in to Waverley on Sunday for 0828:

    https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:U54819/2021-06-27/detailed

and leaves at 0919 for Carlisle:

    https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:U54820/2021-06-27/detailed

where it does a positioning move and then leaves at 1409 for Paddington. There's a bit of jiggery pokery at Hellifield with the diesel, so that FS can eventually go back to the NRM to do "The Waverley" tour to Carlisle on 11 July.

Edit: David Randles, Mr uksteam.info, took ill in 2019 and passed away in October 2020.

Joppa Straight is alongside Portobello Golf Course. There are a couple of siding under the Hope Lane bridge that they often use, one has a maintenance pit so they can get underneath. From there they can use the triangle at Niddrie to turn around. You get a good view from the bridge.

Ah, yes. The Hope Lane footbridge is where I often go to take photographs, looking west to the old Freightliner terminal and the wheel lathe.

@ejstubbs. Thank you for that. Very helpful. As a result I was this afternoon able to watch Flying Scotsman cross the Arten Gill Viaduct, which was really rather splendid.

@chdot - indeed. Unfortunately I don't have the technology to post it here. You'll just have to imagine it. It was dark green and had steam coming out the front.

Perhaps I should have added the wording 'Library Picture' under the photo...

    Ok!

Was going to say ‘nice pic’ - it is, but apparently not yours…

If you're content watching it pass through Edinburgh Gateway then I can oblige https://youtu.be/OxuHTwtkW6M

Tornado is doing some of The Viking Venturer on 20/07/21. An unspecified diesel will do Linlithgow to York via Edinburgh:

Anyone seen any steam today? Heard some chuffing so checked RTT which says West Coast have something(s) in at Joppa overnight, leaving tomorrow.

This is part of the Northern Belle tour. WCRC class 47 and 57 meant to be top-and-tailing Glasgow Central to Carlisle tomorrow, then with Tornado hauling from Carlisle to Carnforth, with the diesels in tow, and then the diesels hauling the tour back to Glasgow.

6201 Princess Elizabeth was apparently meant to be doing the steam leg of the tour. So if Tornado is still in Edinburgh, is it actually hauling more of the tour, or will it sneak down to Carlisle early? It came in from Bo'ness this afternoon with its support coach.

@arellcat Thanks, couldn't figure out what was going on and couldn't get down for a look. Can you figure out which locos are involved from the RTT listing?

Princess Elizabeth in the red LMS colours was my favourite steam loco on my childhood trainset, you could add special oil and it made smoke of sorts. Would love to see it for real.

Ordinarily no, as steam trips will still be pathed as diesels, with a trailing load of something-hundred tonnes. Other tour websites normally set out the itinerary and motive power for each leg.

It seems Lizzie wasn't very well and has had to go to the menders:
