Thought I'd resurrect this thread briefly. A couple of weeks back, Tulyar and I went to Locomotion Railway Museum at Shildon for the very last day of 'The Great Goodbye', when all six A4s were together again.

Maybe then it was someone on here that I read elsewhere on the web, who, when asked if they were available for a pop video involving Bromptons in Glasgow, said they weren't because they were "going to visit six old ladies in Shildon. All the ladies were over 75. One is still a bit of a go-er, and she's allowed to go at 90mph." (I quote from memory: apologies if I've misquoted you)

I think there's a few months to wait before anything like this is back in our neck of the woods.

Today was the Forth Circle. I went up to Culross where the railway is between the water and a rather nice cycle path.

    Hello! Hello! Hello!

And some quality A4 Pacific chime whistles for kaputnik and cc:

Nice that there are still some rail lines that are not fortified against invaders.

The march of the pylons continues though spotted OHL on Whifflet line as coach passed Bailieston on way home from POP, and OHL almost to GLQ on the Cowlairs South chord.

POP and a talk about the new P2 some busy Saturday!

Will it be South Sub-ing again?

Missed it from the Morningside footbridge last Saturday by seconds. But managed to view from over the Balcarres Wall, whisking the two-year old out from his buggy in the nick of time.

Yes, Tornado will be doing the Sub from Haymarket Jn around to Niddrie West Jn. I'll post the timings once they're available from Network Rail/Real Time Trains.

Don't forget that this is The Fife Circle. On September 6th is The Forth Circle which is Linlithgow, Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline, Stirling, Linlithgow.

    Also this Sunday:

60007 (A4, Sir Nigel Gresley) is doing the York to Edinburgh bit of The Cathedrals Express. On Monday 6th 60007 does Edinburgh, Linlithgow, Dunfermline, Edinburgh. On Tuesday 7th it's expected to head back to York.

Please do post the timings Arrelcat. So if I was standing on the bridge at Duddingston Road West about 2.30pm on Sunday, I would see it?

Train times for Sunday, 5 July:

Tornado / Fife Circle (from 11.37)
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U63710/2015/07/05/advanced

Judging by the time between Craiglockhart and Niddrie, I wonder whether we'll have a water stop at Morningside? And Cyclingmollie, yes, 14.30 on Duddingston Rd West would do you nicely for seeing Tornado.

Tornado / Fife Circle (from 15.18)
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U63711/2015/07/05/advanced

Sir Nigel Gresley / York to Edinburgh (arrives 21.08)
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U50589/2015/07/05/advanced

SNG is timed for 56mph between Dunbar and Prestonpans, and 40mph between Prestonpans and Portobello Junction, so although not racing along, the out of town stations like Drem and Longniddry are good for experiencing the turn of speed. Joppa Terrace and Fishwives Causeway are also great places to watch trains on the ECML without going into East Lothian.

SNG will then head to Craigentinny depot at about 21.25:

Train times for Monday, 6 July:

SNG / The Cathedrals Express day 2

Something comes in from Kilmarnock via Glasgow Central and the WCML in the early morning, arriving in Waverley 09.50:
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P90018/2015/07/06/advanced

It pops out to Craigentinny for a bit and then comes back into Waverley with coaches. Then the tour heads out at 11.04:
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U50590/2015/07/06/advanced

NB: Forth Bridge at about 11.20, Morningside on the return run at 13.15 or so.

Then there is the afternoon leg of day 2, heading to Dundee at 16.04:
    http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U50591/2015/07/06/advanced

and returning from Dundee at 19.13, arriving back in Edinburgh at 21.04:

I might try and get a pass to cycle out to Longniddry on Sunday evening to see SNG pass.

Arellcat - any idea if Tornado will pass through Abbeyhill in the morning on the way to the 11:37 start from Waverley?

@K, yes. I think Tornado will be coming in from Millerhill, and passing Abbeyhill about 11.23. This is probably the schedule:

Thank you Arellcat, really helpful breakdown.

When you say "Something comes in from Kilmarnock", what do you mean by "something"? Is it assumed that it will be SNG?

All the timetable pages show "Diesel locomotive" under "Operation information".

Where's the water hose at Morningside?

Where's the water hose at Morningside?

At the old cast-iron footbridge, they tap into a fire hydrant.

@cb if you just missed Tornado last time she came as you say above, then I was the chap in the strange green hat who walked past you just after she'd gone by. I'd been on the footbridge.

I may see you on Sunday. I'll wear the strange green hat, and will be accompanied by micro-Greenroofer if I'm there at all (mini-Greenroofer having spurned the opportunity last time and being likely to spurn it again)

It seems that Sir Nigel Gresley has failed its Fitness To Run exam and won't be hauling The Cathedrals Express. Apparently its next overhaul is due fairly soon anyway, and the boiler is in need of new tubes. The tour is going ahead with diesel haulage - I'd guess a couple of WCRC 47s.

However, in some mitigation you can catch Tornado coming to Millerhill on Saturday if you're in East Lothian around teatime:

The plot thickens. Apparently SNG was attended to late last night and is now happily parked at the National Rail Museum in York. So it looks like we'll see it tomorrow after all.

Tornado is a hissing, steaming, fuming thing right enough. It's like a boiling kettle. Impressed.

Watched Tornado at Morningside. It wasn't completely problem-free. A man in an orange vest said to us grimly 'when I said to the driver "stop at the first bridge" I meant the first bridge, not the second one'. They'd stopped too far from the footbridge, the hoses wouldn't reach the fire hydrant and they had to back the whole train down a bit so they could plug it in to the water. Then the man at the hydrant turned the water on before they'd connected it to the tender...

Mini-Greenroofer enjoyed the experience. We bumped into Arellcat and Chug there too.

I watched Tornado come through Kinghorn station, then I headed to North Queensferry, spotting chdot en route. Unfortunately I had just parked the motorbike under the bridge and I heard the train hissing and rumbling onto the bridge and I could only see wisps of steam. But after heading home through a heavy rain shower on the M90 I caught up with Tornado, Greenroofer, Mini-Greenroofer and cb at Morningside, and took some more photos.

I was thinking of heading out to Niddrie West Jn though I think I've left it a bit late.
