Och they boy will be in bed on Saturday so he will miss it. Might go for Fishwives' Causeway myself to stand on the bridge over Craigentinny sidings. There's no point attempting a night photo with my camera.
Might be able to get him along on Tuesday morning before work.

All the journeys are marked as "diesel locomotive, trailing...". I don't think RTT can handle "steam". But yes if it's going to go round the sub and approach Waverley from the west then it's going to have to have Flying Scotsman at the rear for that bit, so it's at the front to lead the onwards journey to York.

The Flying Scotsman also going down to Tweedbank and over the Forth Bridge to Nth Queensferry and back on Sunday although they're trying to keep the times hush hush to deter spectators. However, careful reading of RTT for alterations to normal services seems to suggest it's due in Tweedbank about noon.

Cyclops, yes, 2T69, 2T70 and 2T78 in particular are showing as variations.
If you look at the 1112 2T70 EDB-TWB service, there is a 13 minute stop programmed in at Stow.
The 1511 2T78 EDB-TWB service shows a 10 minute stop at Stow. There is double track between Stow and Bowland.
And since Tweedbank has capacity for two trains, could it be that Flying Scotsman will sit there for about three hours before being diesel hauled back to Edinburgh?

If you notice the Tuesday empty coaches make a trip into Millerhill, so it's likely the steam engine will only be dragged on the stretch Millerhill-Edinburgh and will be at the front through Morningside.
If it does indeed make a stop in Drem loop that will be one of the better photo opportunities you don't need a car to get to. Only about 5-600m from the station to here and the fence is right up at the line.

That figures, I had overlooked the trip into Millerhill and assumed it was just taking the long way around to keep out the Haymarket - Waverley section.

So does that mean if I was to leave for work at silly o'clock on Tuesday morning, and positioned myself somewhere on the path by the trams between Balgreen and Sighthill, it'd be the steam loco doing the pulling as it headed from Bo'ness towards Gorgie?
What would be fab is if the detectives with the train knowledge sleuthing ability were able to piece together a rough itinerary on the Sunday... (I actually know someone quite high up in the Craigentinny depot through involvement with the Figgate Friends and sorely tempted to see if I can get a grandstand view....)

Klaxon, that wee gap in the Armco on the Drem road will be the plum spot, I think. Good for close-ups, though probably too close unless you have a fisheye lens!

Excellent sleuthing indeed. I could drag weezettes out early on Tues and position on Blackford Ave or Newington (might check for spotter spots in between the two over weekend). But timing crucial as, y'know, limited attention spans of young people today. Not that I'm using them as a cover of course...

Think on Tuesday morning we will get it at our usual spot at the Meadowbank stadium car park, always good to catch a steam locomotive coming out of a section of tunnel, as you get the anticipation of hearing the approach and then a blast of smoke and steam as it emerges.

I do like the thought of something doing a tour so that people can see it then not telling anyone when it's going to be anywhere.

I haven't found any Sunday activity for WR (West Coast Railway Company) on RTT. The boffins on Scot-Rail don't seem to have any more info than we do. But we can infer some of it from the variations to the standard timetable.
On the York to Edinburgh run tomorrow there are long stops at Heaton North Jn and at Berwick. It's almost certainly taking on water at those times.

I wonder what time the ticket holders think their trip will be departing. Presumable there is a time they need to be at the station and a time they are expecting to be back there.

The chance of FS being bigger than Tornado, which is – to all intents and purposes – the same kind of engine, is surely also zero.
Bureaucracy indeed, and a big yah boo sucks to NR. However:
Mr Robertson said West Coast Railways, which will run the trips, had been told only this afternoon that checks had not been made.
Was WCRC simply assuming that those checks had been done? If I were Marcus Robertson I'd've been chasing for confirmation well in advance.
The diesels might be worth a watch, though, depending on which ones they call in. If it's just DRS Class 37s, I probably wouldn't bother.
But we're still on for Flying Scotsman coming up to Edinburgh, so Fishwives Causeway, Drem, Waverley and the South Sub are still all to play for.
