I wonder how many people will get the train to Drem and cycle back

The cancellation of the Flying Scotsman locomotive’s trips in Scotland this weekend have been heavily criticised by Transport Minister Derek Mackay, who accused Network Rail of “appalling incompetence”.

Network Rail’s decision to cancel the journeys were due to them failing to check if the steam engine would fit the routes.

    "

It's ALL the SNP's fault (obviously!)

This is a complete mess but there warning such things could happen on the Borders Railway. When it was originally planned, excursion and tourist trains were part of the design. the line was to have appropriate bridges for double track and the amount of passing places was to be greater.

When the SNP took over the project, they put in place single track bridges and fewer passing places. They were warned such actions would limit the opportunity for events such as the flying Scotsman run.

Still, someone at Network Rail should get their cards for this mess.

From a story that hasn't been updated to cover 'circumstances' -

    "

Network Rail was forced to pay out almost £60,000 in compensation when dozens of train services were delayed by people encroaching on the track during the refurbished train’s inaugural run from London to York on February 2 this year.

Alex Sharkey, ScotRail Alliance area director for the east of Scotland, said: “It is extremely dangerous and illegal for the public to trespass on the railway.

“During the trips to the Borders and Fife, we will continue to operate a full passenger service with hundreds of other trains running on these lines throughout the time Flying Scotsman is in Scotland.

This is not the end of the matter, I am still committed to seeing a full investigation into the reason why the initial work by Network Rail GB was not completed in time and how it was mishandled so badly.”

Thousands had hoped to catch a glimpse of the famous engine as it made it’s way to Tweedbank in the Borders and north across the Forth Rail Bridge to Fife tomorrow following a recent multi-million pound restoration.

An industry source said: “It was a complete middle-management balls up at Network Rail’s office in Milton Keynes.

Saw it chuffing along the embankment between Meadowbank and Abbehill from the front room, slow enough that the exhaust was drifting forwards in the breeze relative to the engine, rather than backwards

I was going to nip out to Spittal, between Longniddry and Drem, but spent too long having dinner. So I went to Crookston Road at Inveresk instead, and watched FS steaming along the cutting from Wallyford. Not much chuffing action - it was all quite smooth and uneventful. Lots of people turned out to see it though.

Flying Scotsman will be in Bo’ness Station from 10am to 5pm on Monday 16 May.

The iconic locomotive will be placed opposite our main platform from 10am where its crew will perform light maintenance on it following its special tours across Scotland.

Flying Scotsman will not be pulling passenger trains on The Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway.

This world-famous locomotive is over 90 years old and as with all historic vehicles, issues can arise which are beyond anyone’s power. Whilst every effort will be made to run to the advertised programme, SRPS reserves the right to vary it without notice.

    Prices

Platform Tickets will be available at a cost of

    Adults £5

    Children under 16 Free*

I am still trying to work out from the RTT info how (if) they are going to turn the train between the borders and the forth circle trips. As Sara's photo shows, she was being towed, so will be facing east at Waverley for run to the borders, then pulled back from Tweedbank.
Might lead to a lot of disappointed folk on the fourth circle route :/

Was planning on cycling down to Gorebridge area to get some photos, but woke up too late

Micro Green roofer and I went to watch it come through Morningside this morning. It was being towed by a very noisy diesel but was still a splendid sight.

We may well return this evening. Maybe we'll see some of you at Morningside Station.

I had assumed it would go via the Sub, but it seems not!

It's conceivable that it will go to Fife tender first, but...

Having seen the footage of the train going throug Brunstane this morning, I've start Thinking a family cycle to Dalmeny might be in order tonight. Any recommended spots closer in where we could be at something closer to platform level ?

@Klaxon - sounds good. I suspect that given the time of night - and a school night too - we may end up in Morningside, but good to know where we should be if we feel more ambitious.

Klaxon is right on. You can get pretty close a little bit further north by joining the cycle path at the access from Main St.

A closer alternative is Lennymuir, near Turnhouse. You can watch it coming, then rush to the other side of the bridge to watch it powering up the hill towards Dalmeny.

Our favoured spot is at the end of Bruce Street, where the South Sub comes by at street level with nothing but a chain link fence between you and the track.

Morningside Station good too, but only if there is room on the bridge.
