"Our favoured spot is at the end of Bruce Street"

Opposite side of railway at far end of Maxwell Street might be better.

@chdot. That's a good suggestion. Bit further for us to walk, but presumably gives a better view along the track than the end of Bruce Street and less crowded than the bridge.

Hmm. Have just looked on Street view. Although the position is good, there seems to be a hedge that would be an issue for anyone with me who happened to be less than four feet tall but is now too heavy to go on my shoulders.

That's what stepladders are for. :-) You can also use a Brompton with the brakes locked on as a convenient step up.

  5. Looking at the RTT data, it looks like on the way back from Tweedbank it goes through the Craigentinny depot. Does that mean it'll pass under the walkway that goes from Stanley Street by the Porty golf course over Sir Harry Lauder?

Yes, it'll be going under the footbridge. I expect half of Portobello will be there ;)

My plan is to cycle to ASDA for 5 and then from there to Dalmeny for about half 7. Anyone want to join? My usual cruising pace is about 12mph, not quick.

Not staying out for the return trip from Fife, it'll be too dark/late/cold for me to care.

  7. Yeah, just trying to figure the route. I might ride out south of Fort Kinnaird and catch it after it leaves Shawfair - I can't imagine anywhere will be quiet of people, but some places might be batter than others...

  8. Will it be going past the Asda, is that not a branch off to go alongside the Innocent? Shawfair, Newcraighall, Craingentinny would take it on the other side of the A1 wouldn't it? Or is it turning on the triangle?

(I suspect I'm going to end up wildly missing this one)

Needs to turn on the triangle to be forward-facing into the Waverley.

I'm thinking of riding/pushing into the triangle further up towards the A1. The high fence stops after only 20-30m.

    Then Innocent/Meadows/Gilmore Pl/Yeamen to NEPN

@greenroofer on street view Bruce St looks hedgy too, but I guess if you were there this morning, it's okay?

  11. I know the bit you mean I think. Little rough track that runs off from the path to the bridge over the line? I explored down there when I first moved to the area thinking it was going to link with something, and it just ended!

Am on bridge at Porty Park. Suspect I'm a bit early but no one else here so far.

@SRD I am pretty sure it's Bruce Street. To be clear, it's the one just west of the new McCarthy and Stone development that used to be the Saab garage and that has the entrance to their car park. Definitely hedge free this morning:-)

  14. As it turned out I had to go to Asda to get the shopping, came out 5 minutes before it was due, briefly saw chdot, grabbed a snap, then had to hurry off home.

Well it didn't stop in Morningside.

Is it taking water elsewhere or just keeping out of Waverley??

It is changing platforms at Waverley according to RTT, but is seems a bit of a detour to do so!

Got a couple of good shots from the far end of Maxwell Street, as chdot suggested. Nobody else there, and fence was only ~5ft high, as I could lean over it!

The residents of Bruce Street must think it very odd: twice today a man and a small boy have arrived at the end of the street minutes before a steam train goes by. It's like we have a strange ability to forecast its arrival...

Afterwards we said Hi to the SRD family and Arellcat at Morningside Station before heading to Sainsburys for some celebratory beer.

    "I saw your back! "

Were you on a bike with someone walking beside you when I passed at the end of Maxwell Street?

For spotting purposes I usually head down to the back of Meadowbank Stadium, on the access road to the velodrome. The pallisade fencing is low enough to look over and wide enough to get a camera through. I also like the photographs with a train bursting out a tunnel and the backdrop of the tenements.

There's additional railway / LNER connection here as this was once all the site of the St. Margaret's Locomotive Works of the NBR / LNER, and there's a fair few old photos with the same backdrop.

Great photos. I saw it pass through Heriot where a large group of foreign motorcyclists had stopped to see what all the fuss was about. There were people watching at Tynehead and Falahill as well.
Does anyone know where the engine was kept last night? Was the firebox emptied? Or was it kept at running temperature all night?

So, Both times we saw FS it was mainly bring propelled by the Diesel engine, although there was steam being generated, coal in a tender, etc.

Is this the post rehab 'normal'? Will it always run with diesel assist to protect fragile systems from excessive pressure?

Chdot; We may have crossed paths at Niddrie, however not knowing what anyone looks like I wouldn't have remarked :)

My video effort will have to come tomorrow, card reader busted, Amazon awaits...

Steam locomotives make lots of noise and exhaust when starting off, but once they get going and they're running smoothly it can be a whole lot less dramatic.

Or, perhaps it was coasting downhill at this point and had the appearance of not doing much work and the diesel at the back was running to provide electrical power for the carriages?

I'm not sure the carriages and locos will be fitted for an form of remote control from the opposite end.

My husband has gone down to Balgreen with the hope of seeing it pass in a couple of minutes. I'm leaning out of the bedroom window with a (modest) telephoto lens hoping to see it pass Murrayfield stadium.
