Commuting 'race'

The leg from ERI was arranged so the bus wait was short. This was not meant to cast public transport as a slow option. SESTRANS were backers.

In reality as the starting time was 8am the roads were fairly ok to drive so gave cars ample opportunity to record good tims.

    What it seemed to conclude.

    • Motrorbikes were fastest
    • Bikes next fastest as long as you raced
    • Car and bus closer but depended on finding a parking space and proximity of bus stop.
    • Rail not reliable / too infrequent

One LB customer did the ERI to St Amdrew Square in just over 16mins. This included time stopped at red lights and also putting a chain back on. The bike he used was a Fujin SLII and had small panniers but still only weighed 10kg with 30% less wind resistance than being on drops. So like a Boardman bike with more luggage space but still 'not normal'.

The record time into town from airport was done by an ex-Commonwealth Games cyclist - seemed to be twice as fast as any normal cyclist. No red light jumping was allowed.

So we got into race territory instead of a test where people cycle at around 10-12mph. First year had a requirement that people stopped and bought milk and paper at shop (mobile phones did exist but not for reading on).

Were car drivers required to stick to the speed limits?

Yes... most were also cyclists so were not trying to race their car.

WC: "A but would you wait for the time you leave the house for the bus to go out on the bike?"

That's why I said twenty minutes and not twenty five*. Don't worry, probably more than anyone else that day I was convinced of the superiority of cycling compared to any other form of transport. After all I was then stuck on Princes Street, needing to return to ERI by bus to pick up my wife's bike to cycle to work in Peffermill. I was very late.

    *and assuming flexi-time working.

I used to organise these in London for the LCC back in the 90's. We used only three bikes, a folder who had to make part of the journey by DLR and two normal bikes riding the whole route. Other participants where: the local mayor in his limo, a disability bus who had to load wheelchair users, a mum with a buggy using buses and a ped using a London cab. We handicapped the cyclists and taxis to give the other participants a reasonable chance to arrive at a similar time. I was not strictly a commuter challenge but a local travel challenge across 3-4 miles called the Great Beigal Race, participants had to ferry a Beigal from Brick Lane in Whitechapel across the borough to the town hall in Blackwall. The area was less fashinable then, you'd probably only find fixie bikes in Brick Lane these days.

    Thanks Gary

Timely reminder that the organisers of the ADMIN EDIT Edinburgh Festival of Cycling need to get organised!

    http://www.edfoc.org.uk/events/event/sestran-commuter-challenge/

Info coming here soon I'm told.
    http://www.citycyclingedinburgh.info/SCC

Under a month before this event takes place and we need commuters to commute - and not just on bikes.

Who is organising the SEStran Commuter Challenge?

It is not actually being run by the Edinburgh Festival of Cycling, they are just hosting the event and giving it some promotion.

This is being corrected as I type.
Kim is quite right. The event is the SEStran Commuter Challenge - part of the Edinburgh Festival of Cycling. They are not responsible for organising it but merely kind enough to promote it.
    I mis-pasted the info somehow.

    Right.

    Just a week to go.

    Most things in place.

Still trying to fix the weather.

Four start points (Ferrytoll for the first time - because of the new A90 path).

    WEBSITE

    It's not a race.

    It's not 'public' as such.

If anyone wants go along with existing participants please PM me (useful insurance if anyone drops out).

What IS public is the FINISH (NE corner of St. Andrew Square) for about half an hour. First arrivals expected about 8:00 (when the cafe opens!)

Also a FREE bike check by Hannah from The Cycle Service.

    It's not a race...

  13. Sad to be missing this as I think I've taken part in them all so far. Will be on the wrong side of the country however.

Sounds like fun but kids to school in the morning means I'll miss it. Can I just give you my quickest Strava time? I pass Ferrytoll and work in St Andrew Sq!!

    Send them to school early!

I think we are 'missing' someone willing to drive from Ferrytoll (leaving at 7:30). Meter parking in St. Andrew Square. (But not all day obviously.)

I'm cycling from Ferrytroll. Its Not ARace, but I might take my weekend bike anyway ;0) Hoping not to be last and I may have to ride a more direct route rather than the 'round the NEPN houses route I always take. ;0)

Does that mean the park and ride is so successful that no-one is willing to forego the bus.

"Does that mean the park and ride is so successful that no-one is willing to forego the bus."

    Probably not quite!

Just haven't 'found' anyone in Fife willing/able to drive at 7:30.

There's someone willing to drive from Edinburgh to do it but that seems a bit wrong!

"Just haven't 'found' anyone in Fife willing/able to drive at 7:30."

That's because it's a horrible journey by car. I normally take rest day on a Wednesday, but could on the Thursday instead. I might be able to sacrifice myself and drive the wife into Edinburgh on that day.

Take it once I arrive by car, and clock a time, she can just mosey off?

If so I'll check if the car is available.

    Thanks.

Yes it amazes me the number of people who do drive (at normal commute times) when there are alternatives (not just cycling). I presume the two new Fife Circle trains have added useful capacity too.

This is partly the point of the Commuter Challenge - making people aware of options. Similarly there are people living (for instance) in north Edinburgh who have no idea about the NEPN - or at least where/how far it goes. Also many people who seem unaware that there is a bus from near-their-home to close-to-work!

The problem with driving for the CC is dealing with the car the rest of the day.

So if it works for you/this great.

@chdot...I don't race to work every day. It's my commute, so by definition the very objective of the excercise? Anyway, sounded like fun, sorry to be missing it.

I'll be taking a wee detour via St. Andrews Square on Thursday, so it seems.

I will diligently not race, and in fact will be skewing things slightly against cycling because I'll be on disco floofy, and I don't care to go above 25mph downhill on it.

But it's mostly downhill for you.

You'll probably be first to arrive!

Hannah can check your bike - once it's cooled down.

Hi All. Called in at Laidback yesterday and am entering (maybe not the quite word?) as the bus rider from Straiton. (That's if I can find my bus pass!)

I'm riding in from the airport. I'm not sure I will have the new recumbent on the road by then, so may be on the road bike.

I've never ridden any distance on the A8 in rush hour so should be an interesting experience - especially getting to race the whole tram line (normally just get to race it from Sighthill to Jenners on my winter commute).

    Dave,

    It's not a race but...

You'll find the roadworks at the Gogar roundabout will limit your ability to filter if you stick on the A8 at approach (either underpass or roundabout)

Your best bet maybe to take the cyclepath round the North side, which you can join after the RBS bridge and then return to the road either at the cones where they are working (dropped kerb) or by going over the grass at the railway bridge.

I come in that way every morning and there is no problem getting through if you go over the roundabout. If you are on the path from the RBS bridge then its usually easy enough and quite quick to get onto the road at Gogar roundabout itself (also sometimes quicker than if you get stopped at the lights).

Still waiting to hear if anyone wants to drive in from Ferrytoll.
    BaldyCyclist you have a pm.

Otherwise that one might be a two horse race.

@galaxy: Okay - I'll rephrase. Avoid the underpass - the contraflow is too narrow to filter through so you'll get stuck in the queue. (You'll also have to watch out for naughty cars overturning...)
