After Transport Scotland changed the wording of the start to its electric service to “later this year” it was asked if the October 2 date had slipped.
ScotRail then admitted it will be the end of October before the first electric train is due to run on Scotland’s busiest railway line, with a full electric service due by December.

We took the train to Newtongrange on Friday to the mining museum. At Craigentinny was stabled one of the brand new Class 385 units that will eventually take over Edinburgh - Glasgow. It was next to a Class 08 shunter that is at least 55 years old and still going strong.
Prefer the styling of the "gronk" myself, front end of the 385 looks like a Boba Fett helmet with a yellow shed door and parts of a novelty oversized accordion added as an afterthought.
What's the definition of perfect pitch? Throwing an accordion into a skip and hitting a banjo.
The 385 does have a sort of squinty alien look about it. I like the 'dinnae mess' scowl of a 68 more.

@Crowriver that's probably Scotrail's "new" HSTs, which are doing route-learning between Edinburgh and Aberdeen at the moment.
HST singular - with unmodified Mk 3's
Odd that 10 minute reduction = 42 minutes when timetabled journeys are 47-48 min through the day, and WTT departures from Queen Street can be up to 1 minute later than PTT
Timings tested with Class 37 and push-pull set (with derogation to run over normal speeds saw the train clocking up to 105mph and a just over 40 minutes for the non-stop journey.
As a regular user I get off at Haymarket 1) it takes 39-40 min with great consistency 2) it avoids the signal snooker in Princes Street Gardens (you always get a red before you get a colour) 3) it avoids the hill climbing to get out of Waverley, and you can cut over via Tollcross/Chester Street to save time getting almost anywhere in Edinburgh.
Going back to July's hiatus it's the man with the umbrella on the platform issue on clearances has reared its head - this has meant the stairs at Croy (up) for example have to be closed and moved to provide wider clearance.
The wedge issue brings back experience of having tram tracks laid by workforce who have previously only built mainline railways and thus manage to deliver a compromised end result. Designers too built some tram tracks capable of taking a 25Ton heavy rail axle load at high speeds, for use by 8-9T axle load at speeds no higher than 50mph - and often slower. Hunch is assembly error, but no statement yet?

The LNER publicity machine had a field day with the new streamlined shape. In fact, experimental data showed that a 40% reduction in horsepower was required when powering from 60mph to 150mph. The high speed of 150mph was used to simulate a headwind. This saving ranged from 41hp at 60mph to 639hp at 150mph.

The savings from streamlining would be reduced for a service that spends proportionally more time accelerating and decelerating than going at top speed. The torpedo is much the same.

Presumably the only way of being able to get between sets in motion. Nothing worse than being on one of the two trains and finding out its the one with the broken toilet etc.
Interesting that the class 385 has, as observed, a flat front-end gangway. The class 380s (think North Berwick line) are 7 years old and have a raked gangway cover, which only moves forward to being perpendicular to the ground when a connection is required.
Someone probably did the sums and decided that any savings just weren't worth it.
Class 385 is rated for 100mph, and there's lots of slab-fronted stock around that have same rating.
Nothing worse than being on one of the two trains and finding out its the one with the broken toilet etc.
The "singing section" of the travelling support are a good reason to change trains never mind carriages.

Indeed I wasn't advocating removing the access just streamlining it while not in use. I had to dash between trains at a station once while toilet training a junior. Not much fun when pushchairs are considered.
I guess it wont spend much of it's time at 100mph but with a solid head wind that's still going to be a lot of horses being used solely to push the slab.

Many hope the coming electric trains between Glasgow and Edinburgh will improve the current overcrowding.
However, they will be borrowed from other routes because a brand-new fleet for the line won’t be ready until March.
In the meantime, two Class 380 trains will be drafted in to run some services on ScotRail’s flagship route via Falkirk High.

ENGINEERS will be carrying out a “significant” piece of engineering work at Waverley Station and Princes Street Gardens over the festive holidays. They will be working on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day to try and realign the railway thorough platforms 10 and 11 and to replace sections of old track between Waverley and Haymarket.
