Anyone know if a FSA BB6000 BB could be replaced witha a Shimano Tiagra one?
My limited knowledge of such things leads me to believe that as long as the axle size is 24mm it should be ok? The Crank is a FSA Gossamer compact.

Don't really see the point in spending £50 on a FSA BB for the commuter when a £13 Tiagra one will do the job just as well (and probably last longer than the FSA one!).

How long are the bearing housings? My only concern would be they stick out too far from the frame and the axle on the chainset isn't long enough to clear it.

The Tiagra bottom bracket in my Croix lasted less than 12 months. My LBS observed that this was quite usual for the Tiagra, they replaced it with the next model up (105 I assume).

Ah, the EBC page on the FSA BB (http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/fsa-bottom-bracket-bb6000-mega-exo) says the BB is Shimano compatible, so I would imagine that means FSA / Shimano, BB / Cranks are interchangeable (if 24mm).

I may take the advice and get the 105 though, the FSA BB only lasted 13 months too. Maybe they all only have a useful life of 3 - 4K miles?

It looks like the Tiagra will fit. FSA is 68mm and Tiagr is 68 - 70mm from both the Shimano and FSA websites:

    'quote' English threading - 68 mm width (BC-1.37” x 24T)

    'quote' Bottom Bracket shell width - 68mm (1.37 X 24 T.P.I.)
    70mm (M36 X 24 T.P.I.)

Hmm, my last post seemes to be spam trapped. Yes some interwebbing seemed to confim they are interchangeable so just ended up going with the Tiagra one.
If it lasts a year it will have done as well as the FSA one which cost 3 times as much.

Now to work out how to get the left crank arm off, had a fight with that last night! Apparently it is 'self releasing' which means it has a bit in it that acts as a crank puller. Not just a case of un-doing the bolts and taking it off like you would a Shimano one then.

EDIT: Oh, this one seems to be caught in the spam filter too...

TBW insisted they sell me an Ultegra BB as the others below it would just fall apart. Based on my experience of a Tiagra and a 105 BB, I'm inclined to agree. Although the Ultegra one did ultimately go too, it seemed to get many more miles out of it than its predecessors. For about the £3 or £4 extra, it didn't seem like they were trying to screw me into buying something I didn't need - they do usually recommend I buy the cheaper bits for the commuting bike.

Baldcyclist, if you want me to pop round to have a look I'm happy to do so. I took the Sora chainset off the Cotic and its a simple job. What do you have on the White? Tiagra? There is a G shaped plastic spacer which is important so the crank arm does not ovalise as you tightnen the bolts when reassembling.

Cheers Dave, took it over to Bike Works as I had 'rounded' the retaining bolt. They got that off, and managed to loosen the crank arm with some brute force and hitting with a mallet. It was just full of salt, and seized.

It's now greased, so should come off without too much trouble tonight. Feel free to pop over for a coffee though if you like, I can give you a lift home.
