Just wanted to share that so far this year I've converted two colleagues to the world of commuter cycling. I'm also about 1 pay check away from converting another colleague to the joys of commuter cycling. Sadly they are all bus users so it isn't any less cars on the road but a good start all the same.

Given I work in a very small company (15 of us) I'd say that was a pretty hefty conversion rate. It probably helps that we are all environmentalists though :-).

Good going Lezzles! How does your employer help cyclists? Ours have installed extra showers and put in new Lockers and a drying room. We also have a rented locked room under St James centre where our employer has installed a row of sheffield stands. Also the usual cyle2work scheme etc... Every little helps.

I should also add that I'm a member of a small group of cyclists who ride after work once a week. Its really slow easy stuff and gets slightly longer as the year goes on. Our typical route takes us from our meetup point at City Point behind Haymarket Station up the WoL to the Reserviours in the Pentlands, and back again to the canal and Toll Cross where beerage is inbibed at Cloisters. If you and your collegues want join us you'd be very welcome. We have a small email list to arrange meets (depending on weather etc) and this week we're meeting on Thursday at 05.40 behind City point opp the Cosla Conf centre. Its another great way to encurrage cyclists - a nice gentle ride out of Edinburgh and returning for around 8 - 9 depending on the sunset. Ave speed ~7-9mph.

I think the main factor is a) we have the Bike to Work scheme and b) the buses out to our science park (Bush) are pretty rubbish since they built the vet school - cramped and very slow by all accounts.

We have showers and cyclists are allowed to stash their bikes under the stairs in the building which has a secure buzzer in and out. The Science Park does have a bike shed but its the other side and only has space for about 10 bikes - to be frank I can never be a***d walking back from the shed when the cars are allowed to park within metres of the building.

Good idea about the cycle trips out. There are the occasional running groups and dog walking groups in the office but so far not enough cyclists to warrant a group ride out. Perhaps that could be our next sociable outing?

Do your bosses not miss you if you head off at 5:40am and don't return till 8 or 9? ;-)
