Missed this one last week -

The council also wants to join forces with Edinburgh University to transform the Potterrow area, which sits behind the revamped National Museum of Scotland and the Festival Theatre, but is currently dominated by a busy road.

I recall that the Uni got permission for the Informatics Forum/Dugald Stewart Building on some sort of understanding that the student centre and the road behind it would eventually be demolished and be replaced by a smaller more direct road. (Dunno where the student centre and the uni medical service would go...) The idea was to link up the George Square area with the Old College / Chambers St area.

Given the drop in ground levels Potterrow-George Square why not look at lowering the road and creating a through piazza over the top, with vehicle access for deliveries

Interesting, cc. I remember the go-ahead for the Crichton st car park buildings as being linked to the uni selling out of the south bridge site (the burnt out AI department above Richer Sounds etc).

I hadn't heard that one, fascinating!

At one stage it seemed like the planning permission was contingent on not providing car parking, and on providing car parking, both instructions/hints coming from the council. The "not" side won, it seems, and we now have a perma-bog instead. In theory if enough money makes an appearance that'll eventually disappear under the second half of the building - the current L-shape being the first half.

Informatics pulled a fast one, post graduate building, no undergrads allowed as this meant no VAT paid. Imagine that, a university building that students are barred from!

Plans abound to complete the square but what if anything will go there?

The model that's on display in the Informatics Forum (top floor by the glass lifts should you find yourself there) has the other half pretty much a mirror image of what's currently there. Don't know what would be housed there though if it was ever built. btw the idea is that the gravel paths through the mud indicate the location of the vennels through the building, while the mud itself is where the new bits of building would sit.

Phase1 is informatics, 2a is part of PPLS (Philosophy and LEL) at the moment, and 2b would be Psychology.

And remember, Informatics is not Computer Science -the old building was research only too..just not quite so emphatically.

There's a board giving the plans for the future at the end of the bikeshed (Potterrow end).
