The 37-year-old Scot is to hold a news conference in his home city of Edinburgh where it is thought he will make his decision public.

    ...

It is not known whether Hoy will retire immediately, or carry on with the 2014 Commonwealth Games taking place in the Scottish city of Glasgow.

Bit of a non story then(?)

Perhaps he is just unveiling his new bike range...

BBC TV now reporting 'plans to retire immediately'.

Must be a big disappointment that he thinks he won't be able to ride at Glasgow2014.

He has had a great racing career - about 30 years - and likely to be still involved in 'cycling' - continuing with an interest in 'the next generation' of track stars.

He also has his new bike brand - not just his 'name' he will be directly involved in the business.

He may even have time to become involved in calling for better facilities on the road in a similar way to that of Chris Boardman.

I got a bit of a numb feeling when I heard this on the recap of the headlines on Reporting Scotland tonight. You can trust Chris to make the right decision but it will be sad to have the Games in Scotland without him competing. It would be selfish to feel let down if he decides to retire before the Games but it's certainly disappointing.

Having met Chris in person at the 2008 Olympic parade, I can say he's a genuinely nice guy and was more than happy to surprise my girlfriend on the phone when she was at work :-)

    No 'what next'.

    "What next?"

His bike brand for one. I suspect he will still be heavily involved in the Commonwealth Games preparations in his mentoring capacity. Coaching would be an option as long as he forgets to be so nice all the time!

He'll have plenty of options but I suspect work-wise it'll be HOY bikes for the foreseeable future.

"In reply to Sir Chris’s comments about trying to improve cycle safety on the roads, The Edinburgh Reporter asked:-”Any chance of you joining the Pedal on Parliament in May this year?”
Sir Chris replied:-”If I am around in May I would love to. It is a great campaign which I have supported in the past with messages of support. I am quite busy at the moment but that is not an excuse. I would hope to be there!”

Shame that a councillor has said:

    Gillian Renwick

    ‏@CllrGillRenwick3h
"Is it controversial to say we should rename the Glasgow Veladrome? The aim was for him to be there - did he get a great TV or s'ship deal?"

    on her twitter feed.

...won't hold my breath waiting for that.

Hoy is far too nice to say anything meaningful about it to the national media.

wow. That was an astoundingly ill-judged tweet from that councillor.

I was just thinking that once they've named a stadium after you, it's probably time to retire. Imagine coming fourth...

    Scotlands new least popular local councillor Tweets;

@CllrGillRenwick: Is it controversial to say we should rename the Glasgow Veladrome? The aim was for him to be there - did he get a great TV or s'ship deal?

It's a frankly bizarre concept that she thinks - sorry, asks a question that implies - that the velodrome was named after him in an effort to attract him to race in it during the Commonwealth Games. Does no one test prospective councillors for the presence of common sense?

Think that's in the realms of oxy(moron)...

I suppose a DNA test might reveal trace quantities of horse(sense)?

A brave decision. Must be tough to give up when there is so much pressure on you but better go while you are still on top rather than risk getting beat when your heart isn't in it any more. Good luck to him.

On a related note, I just completed an online survey where they asked about greatest moments/people ever etc. One of the selections I could have made for greatest sporting moments was Bradley Wiggins becoming the most decorated British Olympian.
