As a proper running-in exercise for the Morpheus, we're going to go for a little ride the day before PoP. My plan is to tackle the Saltire permanent leaving from Musselburgh.

Smidge over 200km and 3AAA points. We'll be going at a steady pace, so if you want to join us for all or part please do!

We'll be starting mid-afternoon, as I'd like to do part of the ride in the dusk/dark to test out our lighting arrangements. Leaving 1400 from MMW.

£3 if you want to get the points, free if you just want to tag along.

That looks like a good ride. I shall provisionally book myself in!

(P.S. I have your email in my "must reply to this" queue!)

I'd like to join you but I have a 400, then a 300 (snow roads) then a 600 Deeside Lass just around then and I'll not want to be cycling I think.

More detail, should anyone still be interested.

Route (and elevation profile) is here:

    http://www.darkerside.org/2013/05/saltire-200km-permanent-audax/

Going to bring the start time forward to mid-morning/lunchtime, as it occured to me that being able to catch the last Glasgow-bound train from Waverley would be a nice idea. Meeting initially at LaidBack's establishment (or more likely the cafe next door for bacon roll purposes).

Pace will be slow (probably around a 20kph average) as we're going to be carrying a bit of extra weight to simulate the LEL-load and it's possible we might have to stop and tinker with the Morpheus en route. Given we'll do all the nav, this is an ideal first 200, surely... You could also push on from Duns to Berwick and train back, which would probably be about 80km.

Also, there's a ford at the 150km mark. Everyone enjoys that.

Departure time to be confirmed on Friday.

Sounds great but POP2 is my cycling activity for the weekend.

I do plan to tackle the Saltire at some point. However my own DIY 200k is delayed to the 18th, due to the headwinds the past few days. So I can't join you...

I don't think this is being run as an Audax this year. I rode the reverse (Erit Lass) last year and the climbing is great. Looks like you'll be finishing around midnight - 2am then? Are you doing it by GPS? Not sure if most bank ATMs give out locations.

@DaveC, in my experience nearly all ATMs print their location, except for the Co-op bank ones for some weird reason: as I discovered (much to my exasperation) on one ride.

Yeah we'll have a GPS running. If that dies and we struggle with ATMs we'll get creative with any late night takeaways that we pass...

PS: we'll be at PoP too!

The Co-op's in Innerleithen and North Berwick are open until 10pm and Musselburgh has a 24 hour Tesco so you should be OK but there's always the options of ATM's

    Slow? SLOW?!?!

    (I'm so unfit)

EDIT: My maths failed me, actually, that's a reasonable average (though with hills I dare say I'd dip below). The recent distillery ride we had brought home to me just how far behind I am on most people and need to get some miles in before the Bealach Mor in September.

My bank card does not give locations, just a unique number for the ATM, which when asked, the bank were coy to give out location listings. I have an RBS card now and hopefully they give locations with receipts.

@WC - I have guessed somewhat at that average, given we haven't actually ridden the Morpheus enough to get any sense of what speed we can maintain! It's reasonably slow though, honest (kph deliberately chosen to make everything sound much more impressive)

I'm sure an empty fish and chip box signed by the proprietor would be sufficient evidence should we get desperate. Maybe...

Thats probably a good estimate of ave speed. I managed 23kph on a 400 at the weekend. My last ride of the Saltire (in reverse took me 11 hours in total, including ~3 hours of stops.

Just ask for a receipt: most smaller shops have a stamp of some kind with address if the receipts themselves don't have these details.

That's what happens with Co-op bank for my card (Santander) but for the rest it gives the location or full address.
