re Jawbones, the "simple" solution which of course won't have occured to the council elves and safeties would be to remove a small section of the fencing that penned you into the jawbones, so that a temporary matting path surface could be laid paralell to the jawbone path, meaning the optimum route across the road was still the crossing.

It would have taken 20 minutes with the buzz saw and could easily have been welded back in place later.

If the jawbones were closed for a few days it would be one thing, but this has been weeks and I assume it might end up being months.

Re blast zones, our bomb evacuation point at work is the Morrisons petrol station at the Gyle. This always inspires confidence as the recommended evacuation distance is 500m from your place of work, the petrol station is almost exactly 501m away, meaning that all flaming wreckage from the office is bound to come to earth with a thump within spitting distance of all the persons crowded around above the highly flammable fuel.

You need to find out where the Morrisons petrol station bomb evacuation point is and stand there instead. Assuming it's not your office car park of course.

I'm not sure what the work is on the stub of Meadow Place between the South Meadow Walk and Melville Drive is, but the genius workmen have dragged the ornamental planters out the way and relocated them slap-bang in the middle of the shared path! Given they have nothing reflective on them it's lucky someone hasn't ridden straight into them.

I've tweeted south team to ask that they are moved. Will get a picture tomorrow with the headcam, tonight,s one was too dark to see them.

There's something going on along Melville Drive that involves the road being narrowed to one narrow lane in each direction.

I couldn't possibly comment on the fact that the roadworks sign that was in the cycle lane going east was moved...

@Fimm I think it's utilities works, they've set up a compound on Meadow Place.

Politics Rule #7: When something ought to be done, tell the public you are doing something constructive, until through the passage of time they lose interest and you can ignore it.

For those pining for a jawbone, cycle to netherurd in the borders. The entrance to the driveway is jawbone.

I am ambivalent, against whaling, pro history. Just allowing us to forget it was ever there I am also against. Was there ever an information placard.?

Whale snot or ambergris sometimes washes up on beaches and is valuable.

Our garden is full of bits of whale taken from the beaches of the west coast and now much sculpted by the squirrels. Natural jaws could be acquired without whaling.

Thing with the jawbones was you could climb them at night when drunk. Any replacement would result in both health and safety going mad. How about a hologram?

    "Not coming back then?"

They haven't replaced all the cast iron park railings that were cut away during WW2 either. Apparently these were never melted down to produce weapons, it was just a "being seen to do something" morale booster.

Sometimes the world changes, sometimes that change is a waste of time.

    So it goes.
