    "£5 million!"

You could buy a bit of motorway for that.

    Or ten verynicewaycode campaigns.

Ahhh, so that's what that building is. I always assumed it was part of the SN complex and would be demolished in due course. Glad its being saved

The remaining part of the Castle Mill is the head office building. Apparently lots of nice old panelled board rooms, ornate fire places, library that sort of thing inside. They recently replaced the chipboard with security steel shuttering when it became obvious that Edinburgh Printmakers were likely to take it over. I think the previous plan had been the usual "let it rot and fall apart to get around planning problems".

Where the new school is going and where the ugly new Napier residences are was the "Viewforth Vulcanite Works", also part of North British. The tunnel under Viewforth (visible currently) connected the 2 halfs of the plant.

When NB moved out to Newbridge (latterly Uniroyal, now also demolished and gone), Scottish Brewers took over the site to relocate the Fountain Brewery by building a brand new, super-modern mega-brewery of the future. This allowed them to demolish the original site ( which was under where Fountain Park and Springside now is) and turn it into a canning line, kegging plant, distribution yard etc. I think the Fountain Brewery also used the underpass to connect the Brewery to the other canning line on the other side of Viewforth.

The £5 million is to restore the building (which 5 or 6 years ago was still in impeccable condition, having been well maintained to that point by S&N). The £500k is for Edinburgh Printmakers project costs.

I thought you'd have a detailed history of the site :)

Oh. That's just the abridged one!

The Edinphoto site has a few great photos. The one of the workers running down the hill is a classic. note the old Corporation bus in the background from when the bridge was open to general traffic.

Uni royal golf balls had hexagonal dimples instead of round. Also first I was ever aware of to produce orange golf balls for spotting in winters conditions.

The "Vulcan Cycling Club" - works club, c. 1905. Edinburgh clearly invented the Hipster cyclist look 100 years before Shoreditch.

    Nice knitted "lycra" skinsuits.

    More recently in the past:

    Nice knitted "lycra" skinsuits.

    Impressive quads, too.

Should send to Rapha, they would take both the black one piece with white trim and the other one, white twin set with black trim.

Not sure about potential set of Masonic pennies on watch chain, tho as masons quite secretive might just be cycling club pennies?

If you are coming down the hill from two path, on the left someone has painted a car parking space on the street but also up the fence

It's an anti-drink driving campaign, I think there used to be some words spraypainted on it along the lines of "reserved for drink drivers".

What use it is up a dead-end street that is only used as a lay-by is anyone's guess.

For a romantic idea of what it looked like in 1905, turn to Scotland’s Industrial Souvenir. Unfortunately, most of the pictures are unavailable at the moment, but the BBC still has the particular one.

It doesn't feel quite so elegant nowadays, nor did it in then I'm sure!

Rather predictably, despite all the noise about being vibrant, metropolitan, sustainable, continental-style, blah-blah-blah, there's no obvious mention that can see of cycling in the transport or sustainability sections.

The site history is also wrong, saying it was the Brewery from 1853. Brewery opened in 1973 I think.

If I have come in to town on the canal that road is my favoured exit to avoid the cobbles. I imagine access will be somewhat restricted when the redevelopment occurs. IIRC there also used to be a sauna brothel on the corner?

Looking at the Exhibition Boards pdf I posted earlier, it is clear that cyclists are still seen in the planners eyes as an inconvenient afterthought. "Oh, yes, don't worry, we'll sort out the cycle paths later..."

They don't want to mess up their beautiful drawings by putting in things like cycle paths & cyclists. I mean that would take up space and look 'ugly'.

Not something one normally admits to recalling! But yes you're perfectly right, hence the empty unit here with a distinct lack of windows; http://goo.gl/maps/9aUm3

Probably the same reason they never put parked cars on the artist's imrpessions yet they always seem to end up in the final design...

Was it Spokes that had helpfully collected all the cycling bits from the Council's Policy on something or another, or was it on here somewhere?

    @kapps

Yes we all know they are there but we do not mention them. I remember when I lived in argyle place and the accountants firm sold their office and a very brazen sauna brothel popped up in its place. We used to marvel at the place but never saw anyone going in or out of the premises.

q3 in Gembo pub quiz - Which Edinburgh sauna brothel is named after the 1980s TV cop show starring Jill Gascoine?

    Sorry to lower the tone.

The Gentle Touch. Still in existence in Argyle Place. I lived in Marchmont for three years and likewise never saw any customers going in or out.

Unlike the London Street sauna, where it is always amusing to see a punter sprint up the steps, look around furtively, then compose themselves and walk away in a "nothing to see here" manner.

I think we could get a pub quiz team, The Gentle Touch, Bassenthwaite Lake. Q1 which was too obscure - Life of Brian. (Remember not in the film but on the spin off LP)

When I was in the barbers the other day there was a pub quiz that I knew the answers too, which may have impressed sweary Jim the barber. Largest land mass, driest place on earth, longest race run in flat season etc

Are the curtains - a liberty print- that my pal's sister made for 2FL, 19 Argyle place still up in the bay? They are as long running as the gentle touch tho maybe it became the new gentle touch, though could be making that up.

I assumed the other one was Life of Brian, but have not heard the LP and did not want to seize glory through guesswork. ;-)

Don't know about the curtains. My cousin used to live in Argyle Place. 24, I think it was.

THE home of the Edinburgh International Film Festival for the last 35 years is lining up a move to a new purpose-built complex, The Scotsman can reveal.

A swathe of land on the banks of the Union Canal, which was previously home to the McEwan’s brewing empire, is believed to be the favourite for the new site of the Filmhouse.

subject to planning permission and funding

It's as good as built then! ;-)

“But [the current building] is a B-listed Victorian church building, which means we are very restricted on what we can do with it.

    I did not know that.

Plain united free church. Film house used to claim Alasdair sim was born at 88 Lothian Road but transpires his father's tailor's business was at 94 Lothian Road. There used to be a plaque? Maybe it said A. Sim born near here?

Is the proposed move to the same north British rubber company building as printmakers?

I would doubt that the cameo or the GFT would ever move but then I think both built as cinemas.

There will be a poll. I am undecided.

Went & had a look at plans in library. Not much to say. Liked cafe/restaurant overlooking canal. Is car park underground? Commented on blocked tow-path cycle space. Asked where was the secure cycle parking & the space for communal bins?

I noted when the plans for the "Bainfield" student residents came up, they were very careful to state there would only be 9 parking spaces, and they would all be for disabled students. Fair enough, you say.

Except, there's about 12 bays along the side of the road that runs behind quick fit ("Bainfield Drive". No idea where the ownership is, some are coned off for staff/contractors, others being parked in. There's also some appalling comedy parking on and around the pavement buildouts at the end of the road where it meets Murdoch Terrace.

I don't seem to recall all those spaces being stated up front in the plans.
