Maybe the Americans had the right idea, keeping the non-liquid utilities above ground & suspended on street lighting columns?

Transport and Environment Convener, Cllr Lesley Macinnes, told campaigners that the decision could not be reversed as it was part of a citywide improvement policy.

"Present problems with the setts are believed to have been caused when utility works failed to look after the cobbles properly."

Someone should come and have a look at the lovely setts on Thirlestane Road, relaid at a cost of £1m over ten months ten years ago. It is barely suitable for motorised traffic and I wouldnt cycle on it other than with front suspension. Damage to the road was not done by utilities works; it wasnt done very well in the first place, and has subsided and split apart all over the place, except where the bonding was put in, which is a small part of the road. Putting in grids parallel to the traffic isnt great (or grate) either.

Poorly maintained setts are not suitable for cycling on. Poor tarmac is better. Edinburgh seems to be skint, so tarmac it is.

Yup, I remember Thirlestane being done, in 2 phases. Two main issues, firstly the setts have huge gaps between them. It does make me wonder where all the leftover setts went, because there weren't big gaps beforehand, so by my reckoning 10-15% of the setts would have been left over. I wonder if setts fetch a good price?

Second problem, primarily on the western end, they left about 3 - 4cm of sett protruding above the bonding. They've filled in a bit with dirt now but it's a jarring experience.

They then put a line of setts *along* the road, at 90 degrees to the rest of the setts, which was supposed to delineate parking. I think they mistakenly thought the north side was end-on car parking, but it's actually parallel parking. So in reality that line of setts is about a metre out from the parked cars, with a continuous gaps about 3cm wide and 3cm deep right where bikes are ridden.

It's a great place to practice for avoiding tramlines.
