I decided to go for the marathons myself as I prefer the look of the slitted centre treads. If they compare to winter car tyres the slits will make a big difference to grip when the studs aren't in play. There's no denying the price on the snow studs is exceptional though.
The 4 for three was a good excuse to restock on spare chains.
@Galaxy they are on the four for 3 as well. If anyone else is ordering and wants to add a couple of 26" tyres let me know.

I don't think the daily deal counts towards 4 for 3 (I tried adding 4 and still got charged for them all).
How good are these ones with studs only on the outside of the tire?

Those tires on the http://www.on-one.co.uk/deals? look good 700 , 38 the size of my current tires so know will fit with my mud guards is this deal just today? Do I need to order before I go home?

I don't know for certain that the ones I've ordered will fit under the 'guards, so there may be a pair of 700/38s going even cheaper once the trial has been carried out...

Well, that's the Marathon Winters down from storage, and fitted in about 25 minutes. Would have been faster but I got the direction of rotation wrong on the first tyre, so that's 3 fittings really. Doh.

How good are these ones with studs only on the outside of the tire?
@galaxy Depends on your contact patch. If you run at high pressure with those ones, you'll find the studs probably only connect in cornering, and straight line braking might not benefit. So you'd want to run them at an appropriate lower pressure to be sure the studs are engaged both for cornering and braking.

@Snowy/galaxy The reduced-stud 30mm Schwalbe Winter still makes Rice-Krispy-death-crackle noises at 75psi with a 100kg bike/rider combination when travelling in a straight line.

Fitted my first Schwalbe Winter this morning - same as @wingpig 30mm version at 70 psi - really impressed on the ungritted bits of lethal ice I crossed...

I went for a test trundle yesterday afternoon, eventually finding some slush on Hermit's Croft where I couldn't tell if it was me being careful or the tyres. Continued to the Innocent, which hadn't yet iced. Came back along the Innocent a short while later when it had iced, went along the Pollock-Holyrood path, which had iced, went along the shared path round the corner at Meadowbank, which had iced, then went down the slope from Hawhill Ave to the Restalrig Path, after waiting for a man to take a few steps down it and retreat, saying it was too slippy; so impressed with the Schwalbe Winters at 30mm that I might get some Marathon Winters in fatter for the sparebike, if I can get a 30 onto the proper bike (which I can now easily test using the sparebike's wheel) without having to get a wider fork as well as a bigger mudguard.

Did a short spin on some freshly iced paths here in Musselburgh after the school run. Schwalbe Winters, where have you been all my life?
Got some double-takes from peds as I rode around on some good icy stuff. One hairy moment when ped and dog both stepped out into a side street assuming it was too icy for anyone to be going anywhere. Luckily dog was well-trained. Still growing accustomed to the counter intuitive notion that I can ride on icy surfaces, so no clipping in yet.

Planet X website sold out of 700x30 Schwalbe Winter. The shop on Sth Clerk Street don't even stock winter tyes (you wot mate?). They also wouldn't order them for me, just telling me to go home and use the website. Total failure of joined-up-thinking there. In fact the guy in the shop didn't even think it was cold outside. Clearly the snow on the pavement was shipped in for the tourists.

Yeah PX have a limited choice of tyres in store and don't seem to be anticipating local cyclists a) wanting winter studs and b) that local cyclists might find winter studs at 40% discount an attractive proposition. I mean, snow and ice...in Scotland? Yeah mate, that's a good 'un...
Earlier this year I wanted a pair of Vittoria Cross tyres, something a little wider and treadier for autumn. I could buy online, but I wanted something sooner rather than later. Nope.
That said, they have some stuff in store that is 'sold out' online. Just not the stuff I want/need! That said, I like the shop better than EBC or Evans...

700x30 Schwalbe Winters at 55psi for me. They were much easier to get on than the 700x32 Schwalbe CX Comp were to get off.

Bike co-op has refused to stock spikes in the past, but it believe that this year they are trialling them.
I also recommend brilliant bikes as online retailer.

@SRD - EBC don't sell spiked tyres??? Great bit of business thinking. I wonder what the rationale there is?

They used to wibble about not being sure they were safe. But I'd been told they wee definitely selling them this year. However, just looked at the website and no sign of them.
