"Cllr Karen Doran, Vice Transport Convener, said: “We’re currently carrying out a consultation...

Does anyone else here the swish of long grass. Consultations really do seem to have become the death of progress in this council. If it was designed for cars they would build the crossing and then apologise later that their hands were tied.

    > Had occasion to be standing outside Sick Kids today at schools out time for Sciennes..

Happily, according to the latest plans for the Sick Kids site, there will be no access to the development from that side, which should allow the road to be blocked outside the development (and presumably enable de-roadification of the school playgrounds.)

“A BAN on traffic outside two primary schools during certain times of the day could be rolled out across Midlothian despite opposition from teachers.

However, a report which will be presented to Midlothian councillors this week revealed that the biggest group of objectors to the scheme were teaching staff – who were also banned from driving to their work.“

Once you go beyond simple closures...you should see what they did at this Copenhagen school. Unfortunately Streetview isn't yet up to date for all of the local street (I guess because the car didn't go down it) - but with some careful navigation you can see much of what changed.

    Old:

    New:

Basically the playground has spilled out into the street, so while you can still drive along it the street (I guess) it is very narrow and slow.

Streetview IS all up to date on the other, less exciting, side of the school:

    New

These views through the school are illustrative:

Of course the Netherlands has been doing this for so long that most of the changes pre-date Streetview. Here's one I know:

A new report has found that school street closures can improve the number of children walking, cycling and wheeling to school without creating road safety problems.

An increase in school street closures would also not result in traffic displacement causing road safety issues in neighbouring streets, the findings show.

The new report - led by Dr Adrian Davis, professor of transport and health at Edinburgh Napier University - sets out the findings of a review of existing literature on the impact of school street closures designed to create safer spaces for walking, cycling or street play.

The findings of these 16 studies have been supplemented by semi-structured telephone interviews with relevant officers responsible for local authority school street closure schemes.

Alongside increasing active travel, the findings also suggest that in almost all cases, the total number of motor vehicles across school street closures and neighbouring streets reduced.

There is also consistent evidence that motor traffic displacement does not cause road safety issues of any significance and that mitigating measures, where needed, have been applied successfully by local authorities.

The report also suggests that school street closures are supported by the majority of parents and residents living on the closed and neighbouring streets and that their support increases after any trial period.

    Sounds good

16 studies, the edinburgh one was an MSc dissertation

    None were peer reviewed

But the one in Flanders - schoolstraat involved 57 schools

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/education/heavy-police-presence-outside-gilmerton-primary-has-caused-concern-one-parent-3043154

Officers have been in regular attendance at the school following a dispute involving parents and parking.

But one parent has said that they worry about children with negative experiences of the police and said that they may be put off from attending school or being distracted when in class thinking that something may go wrong.

“For a lot of young people their experiences with the police have not been positive because of what is happening at home. Their presence also means that some parents, who are not comfortable with the police, will choose to not walk their child to school“

What are the chances that one parent has a warrant out for them?

If they're that concerned, large concrete blocks are much cheaper than police officers and probably more effective in this instance.

If a journalist is approached by "a source" who tells them that, when walking their child to school, they leg it at the sight of police officers - I reckon they should call Crimestoppers, rather than write an article.

If I were to go to school and see several police cars and officers then I’d have turned right back around and went home.

You'd have gone home, not went.

I tried to read the article, and managed as far as the headline and sub-headline. Then I tried in vain to stop the video autoplaying. I managed to read three subsequent short paragraphs before Sponsored Links by Taboola was in my face, then a photo, then odd white space around the article text, as though an image was missing, and after that I couldn't be bothered with the rest.

@arellcat: odd white space around the article text

Yes, I get that on the EEN web site too. I think you're right that it's caused by images taking eons to load - I find that if you leave it long enough then the page does eventually render correctly. Just one more reason to try to avoid having to read their minimum-wage "reporting" IMO.

surely we can come up with a plan that does not make our schools look like crime scenes

Tell you what, maybe if fewer people chose to park illegally...no, that would never work.

'To have went home' is a form that might not be found in a school grammar book but is pretty widely used and understood dialect I feel. Like 'he's sat over there' or 'yous should come over'.

The 2020 survey showed 93% of drivers are speeding past DMains Primary. The council plan to carry out a School Travel Plan Review over the next 24 months, to develop a 5-year action plan. Kids at this School in 2020 will have left High School by then. #verylongpipeline

Not much getting done in #Edinburgh #SouthSide! @CllrScottArthur at a meeting on 12.09.23 we were repeatedly told by CEC T&E officers that progress on schools T&E improvments across #Edinburgh would be delayed due to insufficient staffing levels! #LEZ next summer what now?
