Calton Road closed (or not)

Once again, this evening while walking home, another driver on Greenside Row who refused to slow or stop despite myself and another pedestrian already starting to cross the road. Once again, both of has to step back to avoid the car hitting either of us. The driver (young female this time) didn't even seem to notice us.
I'm hoping she saw us, that would at least mean she was paying attention. On the other hand, that would mean that she couldn't care less about bullying pedestrians out of the way, like the male driver this morning.
This junction needs the pedestrian crossing signal switched back on, and it needs it now.
Have tweeted City Centre team to see if/when anything will be done about this.

6.45 am this morn, Graham's truck parked to load

Wasn't going to involve myself in any dispute, I'm sure I would have just got 'just doing my job mate' or 'mind your own f***** business' depending on the nature of the driver. It's no good CEC saying 'not our problem- call the police' - these issues are by their nature transient and need designed away or a level of active enforcement.
Nor did I hang around to see the super dangerous multipoint turn that the truck driver will have had to do to go back out onto Leith St

Let me get this right: it's the brand new No Entry sign that was flattened? Oh the irony!
Can't say I noticed it as I passed yesterday, I will have a wee look today while watching out for white vans rat running via illegal manoeuvres...

Surely time Calton Hill was closed and bollarded at both ends. I can't think of any vehicle movement it facilitates which couldn't be done more safely and pretty much in the same time via an alternative route.

CEC (and councillors) have been punting Calton Road as a perfect drop off and collection point for Waverly. I guess it's also a route to CEC main office building car park.
I'm guessing it provides high sided vehicle access to back of Waverly station - avoids low bridges.
I know network Rail are very particular about emergency access to their land and would probably object to any closure.
As part of St James development this junction will be signalised with full movement options.

That will be very welcome, and will largely see off pedestrian's usual terrifying running of the gauntlet of speeding motorists turning left.
Can't they hurry up and signalise it already?
Also, let's remember Calton Road and Calton Hill two different, if connected entities. Calton Hill's the steep setted one giving access to the eastern end of Waterloo Place.

Well no progress on Greenside Row junction: still a take your life in your hands free for all ordeal for pedestrians with no crossing signal.
On this morning's evidence though, the new weapons grade signage which has been sited at locations on the approach to Calton Road appears to be deterring drivers from using the road southbound from Leith Street. For now.

I've only been past there once since the road got closed (on Monday, walking down to the rear entrance of the station) and a car completely ignored the road closed sign. That's a pretty high strike rate.
But then we know from the George Street shenanigans that even big metal poles that have to be knocked over won't stop a few motorists from doing what they want.

Well the hole in the left hand lane of Calton Road has now been filled in. Safety barriers and workies all gone. Weapons grade signage still there at the junction with Leith Street, but for how much longer? When will a guerrilla motorist or three decide to 'put it right' so they can merrily zoom off to the Old Town without passing so many traffic lights?
Retaining wall at Calton Hill still 'in progress'. Calton Hill appears to be shut to traffic also.

Well all pretty much back to 'normal' now. Peds have to once again run the gauntlet of speeding rat running drivers hurling their vehicles down Calton Road. The 'road closed access only' sign is hiding meekly behind workies' safety barriers which still block half the carriageway. No entry sign still flattened, thus rat running drivers feel at liberty to gun their engines up Calton Hill also.
Sigh. It was almost nice while it lasted.

So I was pleasantly surprised on the way back this evening that the road was once again quiet. I noticed big red signs had been placed at the junction with Leith Street, plus traffic cones. These latter had of course been moved to one side, but still narrowed the entrance. Then as I passed a big van emblazoned with CITIWASTE proceeded past the large ROAD AHEAD COSED signs, slowing to just clip the cones, then sped off down Calton Road.
Whether or not this is part of the "war on the motorist", the motorists are fighting guerrilla style for sure.

Good news!
The road was restored some time today to 'very closed' status with good signage at both New St and Leith St. This time the barriers are secured in triangular arrangements with cable ties so shouldn't be 'falling over into the side of the road' for at least a couple of days.
The passageway left is narrow enough that the only correct strategy on bike is to dismount for a few metres. Be polite and do so :)

24 hours later the new barricade is still in place and an attempt to move the barriers has clearly been foiled by the cable ties

Came out of station ~6.30PM yesterday and in the 15s I waited at the junction to get onto Leith Street 3 (!) cars ignored the Road Closed sign and discovered the brand-new cul-de-sac. I had places to be otherwise I would have done a scientific survey to see how many drivers were caught by the barrier over the next five minutes.

Only a matter of time before anti-war on the motorist vigilantes bring something to cut cable ties though, eh?
How long you reckon this more 'robust' set up will last before outraged motorists clear it out of the way? Another 24 hours? 48 hours? 72 hours?
I'll be passing by on Friday morning so will give an update then. If anyone else is passing today or tomorrow, let us know what you find!

As I passed this afternoon, the was a car doing a multi point turn on the Leith Street side, and a van doing the same on the station side.

I gave the fence a shoogle on the way through today. Still firm though someone's obviously tried Brute Force And Ignorance on the plastic ties.
